While working for a local fuel company I was told to take a tractor that had issues( no fire extinguisher, bad plates etc). I told the owner about the problem but was told that I could take it or not work there. I needed the paycheck so off I went. One DOT inspection later this is on my PSP report and I am having a hard time getting on with a good company.
Does anyone have advice on this?

If you cave and drive a unsafe vehicle once for that company they will be doing that every chance they get to you. You are in charge of your ship, those people will throw you under the wheels quickly, The rules that are in place is because of this. You were a hero and what did it get you.? If threatened like that gather as much information, document it and when you get fired go to the labor board and DOT and file a report. Do not fold unless you value your life not at all, and others.

You do NOT get into a unsafe truck in which YOU CANNOT sign and certify on the Pretrip Inspection report that everything is up to standard in that truck.

If necessary make a copy of that PTI and walk away from that tractor back to the drivers room, if they fire you for it then you have documentation for the State Unemployment office. This does cut both ways. If a carrier is found to force drivers to run unsafe equiptment it's going to hurt them bad.

If a trucking owner is too cheap to toss a new 25 dollar bottle into the cab and a set of 100 dollar plates or whatsoever they are now... then you should not work for him any longer.

well, we all need a paycheck. but we also respect our licenses and a clean record.

just keep applying, and never do this again.

Some of us have done just that in the past, played the "hero" only to be asked for more and more, it is the reason the regulations have grown, it really hurt us in the long run thinking we were doing some good, now look at what we are left, regulations so deep that if you think you can get away with anything anymore you just fooling yourself and are going to pay for it because it is cut and dried, do not run unsafe conditions, you are a professional..act like it.

Yes those days are long gone, Ive done a fair share of work around in my time taking tractors out with problems. No more.

It's amazing when I told so and so this thing is busted and hand the shop boss a list of the things to fix. The yelling starts at that point. I physically do not climb into that tractor. Period. Yelling in those days was rather primitive if I can use that word in this concept... he he.

are you suggesting I say take the equipment?

I am somewhat confused by your quoting me.

I can assure you, I do not now or ever took equipment that did not meet DOT regulations. and as a result, I have made it well past 30 years of a clean record.

like I said, "we also respect our licenses and a clean record."

how you misconstrued that, to me I took bad equipment, I don't know.

I have quit jobs in the past, and I had been fired a time or two.

all cause of dirt poor equipment maintenance programs, I wish to not be a part of.

Anyone who says they have gone 30yrs in this industry and has never ever rode with questionable equipment is so full of crap they have it spewing out their ear drums!

You may not be and prolly shouldn’t be proud of the past, but high horse deal is a bit much.

Remember.....every story must be believable, and 30yrs of being Mr. Legal in an “outlaw” industry is not. Just saying

Don’t risk your safety score when some lazy idiot dispatcher/planner/ boss who assumes no risk tells you to run unsafe equipment. The best bet is to have a pocket recorder going to have as leverage. If not, tell them
