Another issue i keep forgetting about till it happens..
If you have an exposed stud and mount and the only thing that seperates them is a plastic washer....In heavy rain ORRRR if the roads are slushy it can build a bridge of sorts and cause a HIGH swr or ground out the system(causeing high swr)and god knows what happens then if you dont notice....Thank god for my radios swr protect..It dont take much...If it does happen...Cover it so no bridge can be built...In my case i got slush and i couldnt transmit..Sooo out comes a rag and good ole electrical tape and cover most of the stud...It doesnt take much..

 

Wow. That crack is bothersome. It does demonstrate the importance of looking for such things on a rig.

To heed Craig's second tip, I use some black silicone sealant that is commonly used as gasket material for such things as differentials. I mound it on the area where the whip enters the base. It doesn't make things much prettier, but it does give some protection from the elements, especially rain that too often finds a way to cause headaches in its various forms. It could help ward off the SWR problem that comes if / when moisture could otherwise cause a short, as craig_sez describes.

 

Yeap a royal pain when in the middle of a chat or when you need to use the radio but suddenly cant vause swr protect aint lettin you..
Only to find out its a pen tip sized water droplet doin it and ya done tokk EVERYTHING apart..
