What’s a clutch?

I don’t even understand why anyone would suggest applying throttle when starting off in a truck. For conversation sake we’re talking about an 80,000 lb van loaded to max, a basic 10 speed transmission, on flat ground. OSOW and starts on hills can change things, sure, but you’re basic start involves getting in the right gear and letting the truck get rolling.
Cars on the other hand need fuel to start off or they stallLast edited: Dec 20, 2017
Grubby Thanks this. -
I knew a guy that would feather the clutch in a tight back and then start pumping the throttle. It was... Unique.

Working in a fleet shop you see all kinds of crazy stuff. I've seen guys screw up clutches so badly that the intermediate plate is cracked in half and the clutch discs are warped into the shape of soup bowls. No idea how they do it but they manage it somehow.
Grubby, Farmerbob1, Zeviander and 1 other person Thank this. -
Nope, not at all...
If you drive a manual car now it will screw you up a lot more in school but once you get the rpms down & the double clutching required by the state you will be fine as long as you drive the same truck lol
All trucks are a little different...
Not hard though man don’t let it scare you look up videos on you tube will help you out... -
the only similarity is....there is a stick...but there longer..
Grubby Thanks this. -
Sorry but I disagree with this... Ive always floated in every vehicle I owned and never had a transmission problem... Ya just cant force it in gear. Like @Pedigreed Bulldog said, only time I use the clutch is taking off and stoppin... -
European truck transmissions are also fully synchronisedjlawson1979 Thanks this.

but on the the flip side floating the gears and being Able to use an 18 speed is a fine Art
