Made another Brooklyn run today. This time I did the run. Not bad at all being since it’s only 2 miles from my house so I know the area very well.
Mortarmaggot Thanks this. -

Made it home at 0053. My son noted the time. Lol
It was a good 15 day system run and holy crap did I learn a lot. I'm going to close out this thread and start a new one about a rookie system driver.
On the pay side, the one full 7 day pay period grossed 1699. Yeah, I wish I could have run two more miles to break 1700. I don't know where that gross sits with everyone, but for me it's decent pay. I think I made between 34 and 35 gross for the two weeks out.
In my next thread, I'll start with a few things I wish my trainer would have told me and some lessons learned along the way.Latinstartrucker, wsyrob, Smut and 1 other person Thank this. -

I called my dispatch and already gave them my next available date. A few new guys forget to do that and miss out on some good loads. We are a first in first choice terminal. -
Disptach already called and gave me a couple of loads to pick from. I took a 3 day out and back to Chester PA. Will be home again next Friday afternoon.

You already smoked me, paywise 1500 grow is about as good as it gets here
Orange713 and Mortarmaggot Thank this. -
For example, I picked up a load out one of our regular outbound shipper's and it was going to deliver near Charlotte, NC. I knew exactly how I wanted to run this but I pulled up the gps route and google maps just to see mileage differences.
Google wanted me to go south through NYC and Washington DC then cut over to 81 through VA and on down Fancy Gap etc. This was never a real option to me.
Qualcomm wanted me to go west to Hartford then down 91-95 and then across the Tappanzee to 78 and hook up to 81 near Harrisburg PA. Difference of 1 mile between the two.
I chose option C, my own route. 90 west all the way to 88 in NY near Albany, then down 81 from Binghamton NY to Fancy Gap. This was 80 miles longer, but NO traffic (I95 through CT and 287 through NY/NJ during evening rush...no thanks), NO bridge tolls (tappanzee and 78 into PA both $20+ for trucks), and plenty of truck parking.
Had I gone with the qualcomm I would have run out of hours on the Tappazee bridge during evening rush. Shipper is notorious for taking ages, I got there at 8 and didn't leave until after 12 (started my clock at 5:15). Add in CT rush hour and I would have wasted hours and hours of drive time in stop and go with very limited parking.
Also the reason I didn't take the thruway down to 84 and then over to 81 is because the extra 40 miles of fuel running 88 to binghamton was cheaper than paying the tolls on the thruway.
My point is that sometimes its better to get the big picture with trip planning, you need to know the BEST way to get somewhere, not the shortest.Last edited: Dec 24, 2017
