Really, this does make a lot of sense. It seems like the railroads are just about the last (at least in the transportation industry) to be hit in a recession. They are also usually the first to recover.
These route driver jobs can be a very good gig. Of course there is a lot of physical work involved. But it pays reasonably well, and might get you through until the railroad blows its whistle for you.
Good luck! -
Thanks for all the replies.

The training wouldn't be in Chicago I think it would be in Marshfield, WI, but they have a terminal in Gary. They also offer a salary program for veterans. Might be something to get you through til the RR calls.
-
Anyone know what the pay is like?
-
Another thought, I don't know if you are near a coca cola plant or not, because the one near my home in south Georgia is always needing cdl A drivers. Even now they don't have enough drivers and I think they are starting them at 50k..............

I talked to Falcon and they said I need to already have the CDL coursework, whatever that means. Also they don't have a salary program for veterans.
-
If you look up I already suggested that,..OK not coca cola directly,..but close enough.......
And in my opinion,...the local stuff is the easiest way to obtain a cdl,...Sure your gonna have to be a drivers helper while training,...but even that can pay pretty well......... -
I didnt think of this until now. I bet the montgomery GI bill would pay for truck driving school.
-
You might want to look into that,........
