Hey guys, I am a company driver on a big red dinosaur of a high rail. A 90 something Sterling with Mercedes engine. Overall, the truck is ok, just one problem. Shut down at border or to run in for a coffee at rest stop and the old girl will just click when push in starter button several times before turning over. Have booked in shop several times and they say all is good... at a loss and one of these times she will not start. Any ideas fellas?

Better than a new truck. I'd guess solenoid, or short in solenoid? Or bad grounds.

I would agree as when it finally does turn over there is still some clicking initially. Shop insists all connections good, there is 14.1 to 14.4 V in system while running and a brief shut down has me at 12.2 V generally for restart. Thanks for reply. Will keep insulated coveralls and a candle handy in case it won't restart as we are getting bitter cold up here..

Let it idle? If you don't have a APU or heater.

Bad solenoid not engaging the bendix. Sounds like you need a starter. And 12.2 volts is undercharged, it should be around 12.6 with the truck off.

Don't turn it off once you get it started. Check your battery box for lose connections. If you can get under the truck check the cabling and grounds. Also check at starter for lose connections or bad cable. Be careful playing around the starter if the batteries are hooked up if you go that far. Also, at the starter there should be a ground strap from the starter to the frame rail. Make sure that is intact and making contact.

Next time if it doesn’t start by clicking for a long period of time, get someone to help you by you hitting the starters silenoid(long steel object) and your helper Turning the switch at the same time.

    All good suggestions above.
I took my ground to frame wire off, and put one of those washers with the teeth all around it
in between wire and frame, after I coated all of it with the copper never seize, and no more issues.
