I have a 2004 Peterbilt 387 that I am fixing up for my own use. I just had to satisfy the driver in me. Anyhow, I needed to pick up some parts that were in need of replacement because of poor condition or just plain broke.
I looked for a truck salvage yard in my area, to see if I could find some good used parts. The owner was very helpful and pointed me in the direction of where I would find what I was looking for. Trucks of every make were there and it was amazing to see so many retired trucks.
As I looked around, I couldn't help feeling sad for all of these once proud machines that carried so much freight and were now at the end of the line. Trucks that were hit in the front, some that tipped over on their sides and one majestic 379 that burned to the ground. To think of all the stories that the those trucks could tell.
I got my parts that I was looking for and I mentioned to the owner that I was very impressed with his business and I would be back for more. He is me to stop by when I had time to just look around. I most certainly will.

A junkyard can be an amazing journey; even just to look around - or as I tell them "I'm going shopping."
I still have regrets on the old WWII Dodge 4X4's - several in a row, that I could have gotten for peanuts.
30 - 40 grand each now, if you can find one. Same with my 55 Chevy pickup.
I Sold it and instantly regretted it. Heavy old steel body you would hurt your knuckles tapping on.
Today's junk - if it isn't plastic, will dent with your finger.
You ever see a truck to haul steel from a Distribution yard with half a cab? A straight job with saddle
on the front bumper to haul 40' lengths of angle or pipe to a customer site.
I was in a yard and saw one that had that - on BOTH sides? Looked like an airplane ####pit.
Must have been from the 50's it was all rounded, not squared off like later trucks. think it was a Brockway.
Shoulda save that one too cause it was just too weird.

I started out looking for the brackets that hold the taillights. Peterbeater wanted $170. The yard I was at had the whole assembly, cross member, two red lights, two reverse, wire harness that was brand new... $50. They found that when new trucks get after market bodies installed, that the tail light assemblies are removed. I stumbled upon a super deal!
Rolls canardly, but can barely make it up the other!! Love it!
When I get into one of these yards, I instantly know I should've brought a trailer along. The major problem is I get "Pet Shelter Syndrome". I want to take 'em all home and fix ' em up!!
But just to see these trucks that served their master to well in the final resting place, with all of the things that owners added to make life more liveable, I find very interesting. Like a museum.

    Rolls Canardly here,
Another input the "plugged in" kids today miss out on.
Get off the couch, for gods sake and DO something!!

Go buy an old car you like - and fix it up.
Go to the junkyard and take all your parts off yourself.
Get your hands dirty, and have fun doing it.
You never know what you may stumble upon - once you are there??

Yes I have rust in my blood, and love junkyards, too.
Done this since 1983, and before, but this find is my best yet.
Got this little hottie for about what you would pay for a rusty 4X4 pickup truck.
My latest find is above. Runs and drives w/key. Abandoned. It's in my driveway now. Just got Title.
"I'm not that guy" - (But I could BE that Guy.)

Rolls down one hill - Canardly get up the next.

It is just amazing what is out there, waiting for someone with some ambition and a box of tools. I will be stopping at this new found treasure chest/ salvage yard often after I retire this October.

Elderon, Wisconsin. It's just a bit East of Wausau. Everything is cover in a nice blanket of snow, hidden until springtime.
