Well, what started out as a promising search for information from Johnny DOT ended me back where I started. The questions as asked,
1. "Will an MBS weight stamp on a D-ring be acceptable for a rating instead of a WLL stamp?"
2. "If one of your officers inspects the trailer and sees MBS instead of WLL, will that be an issue?"
After a couple phone calls back and forth, I ended up being told to contact the manufacturer and get their opinion, in writing, and keep it with the trailer. They would not commit to anything MBS related.
I found my download of the Securement Handbook, Section 2 (pg 27-28) talks about WLL's and refers to Appendix A for default ratings for unmarked components. It just lists, chains, ropes, straps, etc.
An online search shows one manufacturer listing a SWL as well as an MBS.4mer trucker, snowman_w900, whoopNride and 6 others Thank this. -

Like I said in the back room, I would get the heavy ones and be done with it if the customer will agree. They're not very expensive at all and I've never had a dot question them. As long as you and the customer feel safe your golden. Tie downs aren't required to be rated so there's really nothing the dot can say. It's about piece of mind.sawmill, 4mer trucker, tony97905 and 7 others Thank this.

Yes it does!! I thought it was a fairly simple set of questions, since they both only require a Yes/No answer.
I sent the guy in charge of the trailers an email explaining the situation and my recommendations. He said, "Do what you think is best." I'm going to use the heavy ones and be done with it. Some may see doing it this way as underhanded or going against the driver, but at the end of the day, my name is on that work as well. They're only about $5 more per piece, so if I have to eat $20, so be it. Pretty cheap piece of mind, if you ask me.
Thank You again to yourself and @superhauler (phone support) for your help on this!!sawmill, 4mer trucker, tony97905 and 9 others Thank this. -
My hat off to you @1951 ford and respect you for doing your homework and your concern on seeing what's the best option and safest for this guys trailer. I'm sure he would be happy either way but I'm like you and want to make sure everything is meeting standards and is safe and strong. I too would go with the heavy ones and know it will last so you can sleep at night. The last thing you would want to happen is something to fail and come back to you.
When I see your other work that you post on here I have no doubt you'll have no problems at all and it will turn out great!sawmill, 4mer trucker, tony97905 and 8 others Thank this. -
