What smell?. Battery cooking, sulfur, rotten egg smell?
Your alternator could have overcharged a battery. One bad battery will render the others useless.
I see you said gauge showed proper charging volts.
Just posting information.
Slow starter rotation. I would look at batteries first.
Good luck.
In a real pinch. Help.

Got batteries coming. And a load tester.
-
don't matter, he screwed up the alternator now. best to have the darned thing towed, before it goes
-
The battery ground cable rubbing on frame, I don't think, would affect anything. Just another ground point.
Oil dripping on ecm get that cleaned up.
Good luck.Oldironfan Thanks this. -
I had alternator on a simular truck go bad a few years ago. It was a columbia as well with a Ddec 5 egr 12.7. Any way that truck keept running until the volts got down to 11.7. While sitting at dealer. Truck was warning beeping until not enough power for ecm to control engine and stay running. Way different symptom than this issue.

Here's an update. All batteries were same allied brand. 2 were 925 amp 2 were 650 amp?? The 925 amp smoked at 300 load. The 650 amp smoked at 250 load. Very good to know. Different amp ratings did not make any sense. Not on a class 8 tractor.
baha Thanks this. -
New update. Starter is next part. We shall see how that helps.

Mixing different amp batteries? Not a good idea.".
