When you hear the "I don't", "I won't", "not the way I did it", just tune out and move onto the next one.

I can explain the why not to do it. As a rule the driver clears more than the truck will after the smoke clears. They all say well look at all the money this mo fo makes off me. With out me......... I totally agree the driver is valuable. A good driver will make me money all day every day. An ok driver I break even any lower and I loose money. They will beat a nice truck to death and do the one thing you tell them not to the first time you ain't looking at them. Run your CSA score in the dirt by not looking the truck over and blame you for not fixing it. I can't fix what I don't know is broke. Luckily my trucks are home every Friday or Saturday morning. Till I get used to a guy the truck has to come to the yard first. I found the problems before an inspection. One for instance truck comes in with the drive brakes toast. They were less than a month old. I ask the driver why he hasn't said anything about it being hard to stop. His reply it stops fine. I rented his trailer 2 weeks prior he picked it up. Dirt dobber made a home on the service side of trailer. So not trailer brakes for 2 weeks all we do is 80k and he is clueless. But I'm the sorry ####### that fired him for nothing

That's the tip of the ice berg. Unless you get lucky. I had a top notch hand for 15 years. Hired a few since, they don't last long. The guy I have now may if he don't retire

I suggest you really really put some effort into checking him out, his past employment, length of time on previous jobs, home life, length of time at previous residences, credit report too. Possibly even ride with him to pick a load. How does he "pre-trip" his equipment ? Handle the truck, ( I always took my students downtown into congestion) to see their frustration level. This will bring out a hot head temper. Which you don't want, right ? Luck to ya'

A good driver will buy own truck or get hired on with private fleets making 100k

These kind of issues I think about all the time. I know it is not an easy process. I can say these are the reasons that hold me up always, however I don't want to discourage myself and never try or put any effort towards it.

Thanks for the advice. These are the things I will definitely do during the hiring process. I guess the biggest problem find a driver who meets all requirements and last long.

Yes I know my equirements for my state when it comes to hiring an employee. I also have an S-Corporation and run my own payroll via state and federal regulations. I'm a W-2 employee for my company.
