I’ve never said anything on here on pay because I know it is t a subject he likes, but for context from someone on the other side getting per diem I will offer my results since he is discussing it.
I did not graduate school until the middle of March and got on a truck at the end of March so I only have just under 9 months of pay to look at.
By the time I ended the year of 2017 my cpm average is up to .414cpm because of the bonuses @Steelersjunkie mentioned that we can earn, plus I’ll have those vacations. :)
I drove 97k miles in a hair under 9 months and made $39,700, so in a full 12 months I would’ve easily made over 50k which isn’t bad.
The deductions you can take with straight pay ARE good, but you better be good with keeping up with all those expenses you want to deduct (as I know Steelersjunkie IS good at). However, IF you are married with the new tax plan that just passed your STANDARD deduction is going up to $24,000 so I’m not sure you have a possibility of doing better than that by itemizing unless you have a lot of other deductions to add as well. For me I chose the per diem, with two college age kids it helps getting a little more financial aid and the vacation pay is good, every situation is different so like Steelersjunkie said, consult a professional! Peace y’all, and enjoy Raphine and the game brother!! :)

My per diem safety bonus is .01cpm per quarter and then at the end of the fiscal year I get .01cpm fpr every mile ran during the year. Is that not the same as straight pay?

Thank you very much for the "consult a professional" statement. I wanna scream that from a mountaintop. Look people, stop asking us. Ask someone who knows your personal situation.

That 24k deduction, from what I am reading, is the tax code for 2018. No matter what, it won't affect me. My wife and I always file married but separate. One more time I will say consult a professional. Even with the new changes I'm further ahead. Getting over 12k is not only hope, it's a laid-down guarantee. I don't even fault folks for being curious anymore. I never came into this profession with the mindset of picking a company and running with them forever. I'm buying a truck in the next couple months and moving on. My stuff is relevant because folks should make an informed decision even if they want to be a company driver for the rest of their lives. Set yourself up correctly, and don't go in blindly. I want Millis to succeed because they are beyond amazing. I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone that will listen. Even when I am going down the road in my own truck. I am 100% loyal to Millis because they are amazing. But sorry man, I can't support the stupid reasoning for split pay. You can try to argue it, and that's cool. I'm sticking with what I can see in front of me. It's like religion. If you want to believe it so bad, show me what you can actually prove. If you ain't got proof, move on and keep your ridiculous beliefs to yourself.

Just so you know, it's a complete myth that you have to hang on to receipts. The per diem deduction is set up so you don't have to do that. The only receipts I have to hang on to are the ones for anything I buy for the truck. And extras like paid parking and occasional incidentals not related to food, showers, and lodging. Which, by the way, you would have to do anyways even on the per diem plan. This is what I was talking about. You were sold something that isn't correct. Do you, Boo. But I know what the deal is because I'm looking at a destination that is beyond your horizon.

@JOHNQPUBLIC I'd love to sit down and talk to you in person some day, preferably over a beer. I have no doubt at all that you could take the research I've already done to the next level. I know where you went after Millis. Good company. I'd be more interested in where you settled, because I'm curious what your knowledge has lead you to. You're awesome and I appreciate that you have shared your time here.
