I hear rumors, that all class 8 trucks regardless of mfr date of body or engine will have to have elogs of some sort by 2020. No exception or exemption. Any truth to this? Thank you.

more likely to force everyone into a new truck by one way or another. like for "environmental" reasons. by 2020 would be tough. a lotta farmers in old equipment in my state, and they hold a lotta land and vote. there is some pushback already in the ag world.
Oldironfan and HopeOverMope Thank this. -
Like 99.9% of thruckstop rumors, it's just that. A rumor.
Like every date based mandate, the policy makers are content to let the very few older trucks to die. Sure some people will spend hundred of thousands to keep that old beast running, but that will be so small a percentage of drivers that it's just a rounding error.Dino soar, peterd and Oldironfan Thank this. -
I could see them parking the older trucks or making them stay inside the 100 mile radius. 150 if Farm tagged.
The day they outlaw paper completely is the day I will become 100 percent outlaw.Dino soar, OLDSKOOLERnWV, VTech and 9 others Thank this. -
Rumors are what rumors are: rumors... if we listen to all the rumors about trucking we will all have mental issues... Lol
Oldironfan Thanks this. -
I'll give it a year before the insurance cost for non-eld make it too costly.
bigguns and whoopNride Thank this. -
I am confused how an E-log device would interface with an older, non J1939 truck. Did your rumour mill folks explain how the ELD was going to interface with the older trucks? I would love to know how they plan to accomplish this.

By a certain app on smartphones.

Are you suggesting that the operators require a smartphone to drive their trucks? Would these apps communicate through a cell network, or through GPS communication to the app? I am curious how this would all work? (Excuse my lack of technical understanding of how the app would work; I am a tech trogolite).
