So what's your cost per mile?
-
cost per mile is always 3 cents per mile higher than anyone is willing to pay.....or at least it feels like that some days.

1 dol seems a magic figure. Mine in 2017 turned out to be 98 cents on 94 k miles, with own authority. Truck payments, which I don't have, make the 10-20c difference. I still spent 15K on maintenance, that offsets the non truck payments in a negative way. I was taking many loads for the most part of 2017 for no more than 2 dol a mile, add deadheading or cheap back hauls and it puts me to about 1.66 on all miles. That leaves me with a typical driver pay and it is unacceptable! It needs to be at least 2 dol all mile average on 100K a year - 100K miles a year must translate at least into 200K gross!!!!!!

So does your cost per mile include your salary?
-
I have a S corp and after withholding I write myself a paycheck of $2000 a month. That's for taxes though. The rest which is the dividend, I take as I please. In 2017, with the rates I was getting, I could not put the driver in the truck. Maybe if I paid him on 1099 about 45-50c a mile.... but a full fledged W-2 employment would have been out of question.
