My fixed costs for plates and ins and annual permits etc are 1000 dollars a month. Thats just to keep the name on the door and legal to go down the road. Nothing else.

Are you seriously planning to run part time on $1.00 / mile, without even adding in the fuel cost?
Well, with those low of rates, I'm starting to hope you fail miserably!

iv made good money on 40k mile years, other years iv run 80-90k miles on made less miles isn't the most important thing

I said 1,000 miles, Special-K said $1000 respectively. Based on the numbers I’ve put together it’d be 1,000 miles at $2/mile to cover the truck cost per month. That wouldn’t be paying me anything to run it since I still have my regular job. This would be so the business isn’t taking my personal money (or not a lot of it) to sit for awhile. Only until I can get brokered loads, or build a customer base.ZVar Thanks this.

It is a huge myth that no-one wants to work with new authority carriers. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are a small handful of brokers and customers who won't. 99% of the rest of them will. And the ones who won't you're not missing anything good so don't even worry about it.
I agree with Ridgline. Even running a truck 40,000 miles a year is a handful. You're not going to do yourself any favors learning the nitty gritty of markets and rates attempting to do that a couple of days a week???
What you'll most likely end up doing is one of two things. You'll quit your other job and focus the attention necessary to make something worthwhile of your trucking business. Or you'll go out and get a bunch of unnecessary trucking expenses hanging over your head on a truck that mostly sits parked. And your regular job will end up covering those expenses to the detriment and neglect of everything else in your life.Justrucking2, Dan.S, Pieter78 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I hope it’s a myth. There’s a lot of negative literature out there when it comes to being an O/O. I’d assume it’s either from disgruntled failures, or guys who don’t want the extra competition. I want to get the business established, start calling brokers and hopefully never go back to work for someone else again. Asking all of this is me trying to cover me ### in case those brokers don’t want me doing the work, and if customers aren’t easy to find within the first few months. Already know of some places I can hit-up for loads, but I probably should have the truck first.
I just wanted to know of some small O/Os real world set monthly costs so I could see if my numbers jive. -
I'm in my second year and paying 2400 in insurance (minimums mind you) and then add in fuel, 2 weeks worth for me is at least 3000. Then your have maintenance costs, if something happens on the road that needs repair (even if it's just parts and you do the work), if Mr. Dot finds something don't like at a random time (that'll cost either time or cash). And there's plenty more misc things that you don't think about untill your on the road doing this. This business is only part time for illegal operations or if you've managed to work yourself into a well paying niche after years of work your butt off. Good luck driver.

Yep, I've heard some people weren't even offered insurance from multiple places they contacted. That'd be my first thing to figure out.
