Oh no. Stay in that truck.

Take your per diem at tax time based on your number of service days away from home. When we did our teaming it worked out to 306 days one year for 13800 dollars against taxes on 65K or so.

That owner has been riding the gravy train with stupid drivers taking .02 for way too long.

No wonder he growled at you two to gtfo by sat.

I tell you what. .02 for 1500 miles in 30 hours works out to 30 cool dollars for the two of you. HE the owner gets to rake in maybe three times that much on each of you.

If he fires you two for failing to cave and take the .02 against your Texas law regarding not having to take Per Diem burn him down on unemployment.

Per diem is alive and well. Only an owner operator will be able to deduct it on a tax return in 2018.

    REEFERman450, jammer910Z and x1Heavy Thank this.

Well, that's that then I guess for company choke and pukes. Cost cutting on Uncle Sam's part. Increasing the revenue too.

Mr Big and his Millions should spend a dollar on a burger of dubious quality down here on the highway in 2018. /snarky...

It’s s pro business agenda aimed at growing the economy. It’s defin rough on a driver losing that deduction. Owner operators have always had more benefits in the tax code though.

Well I guess if your fired he should pay you on the spot, and make sure you video record it, and show it to your unemployment service. As for per diem I'd rather claim it as days worked tax credit. Hell free coffee would be nice of an emoyer, yet it never happens.

But as a carrier I can still "reimburse my employees" for M&IE, unless I am mistaken? My accountant says that part has not changed, so I expect to continue to give this option to my drivers. It makes a huge difference at tax time, and has helped one of my drivers with kids in college land some pretty substantial financial aid.

My company has the option for them to pay per diem. So I switched this year and now I still get per diem sice company is willing to pay for it or do the tax thing so I still get it. Then at end of the year I'll take that standard tax deduction of $12,000 for single person

If the company pays for per diem from my understanding it a good deal because now you get both.

Be careful you don't get paid per diem and try to claim same. I don't know what the doubled standard deduction will come to, but if it's that much based on 17K you are left with 5000 taxable adjusted. That's not much.

What we do is withhold over and above even though there is no interest. Something like 100 to uncle sam and 75 to state each week per person. Eventually the taxes go bye bye (Arkansas in particular. We had to pay thousands in the past... ugh...) and we get something back whatever it is left. That forms a foundation for the new years savings against feast and famine.
