Since when does any stupid government need scientific proof to enforce laws based on fantasy? Answer never!

Take it easy sir. Nightwind has not given a problem here. I value what thoughts that come from that source.

Hell if you read some of my lunch counter posts you would see I have a problem TOO.. He he...

FFE a long time ago governed the tractor at 63 secretly. The tractor displayed 65 on the speedometer. I come along and drive the thing. It's 16 miles on the odo when I got it, virtually brand new, whoo hoo.. Anyway. There is a little something I like to do in Wisconsin which is racing the milemarkers to try and put em away within 30 seconds (Which means 120+)

I had a couple loads as a team which failed it's schedule a few times for speed averaging, so on the 4th load I crossed WI and timed the milemarkers It kept coming up 63 roughly. Hm.

Bought a laptop and a rand mc Nally GPS and hooked it up.

Boom confirmed 63 in real time. Now we have a problem. Took a screen shot and evidence log, turned the tractor into the FFE shop at Lancaster TX to have the speed corrected to 65 actual. Safety calls me in. Saying you need to keep quiet about that stuff because they save a bunch of money restricting at 63 rather than 65. Oh. No problem.

That was almost 20 years ago more or less. You would think that they are now showing proper 63 at 63 these days, I hope so. otherwise some of their appointment times are getting too close together for being on time if a driver thinks he is planning a trip at 65 which it isnt. Now on the other hand, if you drove for the FFE presidents fleet you got a tractor that could do 72. Ha....

Absolutely! A lot of LTL companies had them in their day cabs. The manager would go out to the truck before you'd leave out, unlock the tachograph unit to switch the cards. He'd save the printed one for your driver records.

Sounds like a bunch of ways to waste money on statistics. If that's the case they will definitely do it. When I used to drive governed, company trucks, if someone was struggling to get around me I would do everyone a favor and let off the gas a little for three or four seconds then put it back to the floor. I drove for a company that had all w 900s with 550 cats in them.they would turn your truck up 5 mph for every year you were with them and topped that off at 80 or 85.start at 65,next year 70 and so on.so I got mine topped out after a few years and still drove 70.but the extra speed gave me another option when in a jam and helped me avoid a few accidents. You have five ways to control the truck.go left,go right, go straight, speed up or slow down. When you're already going as fast as it will go you just lost one of your options.

There was already a proposed law for that thru Obama's executive order. Trump got rid of that law. Trump tried to get rid of the ELD law but that can only be done thru an act of Congress. Some GOP lawmakers and Trump have tried attaching it to other bills to eliminate this law but to no avail.

I think the preliminary causes would be a very interesting statistic, as my experience seems to suggest that it is not speed differential alone which makes a slow vehicle dangerous, but speed differential combined with a lack of collision avoidance by the driver of the slow vehicle (obviously with a reckless and distracted public for all cases).

In my first few months of driving, I concerned myself primarilly with following distance and speed limit (driving in a governed truck in a state with a differential speed limit). The result was very frequent near-misses from people who would box themselves in beside me then cut me off the moment a gap opened up (and a lot of brake application without much consideration given to what was going on behind).

But, when I decided I had enough of that and started pre-emptively backing off and not allowing anyone to get boxed in (tending to drive a lot slower and with a much higher speed differential), I had my near-misses drop to almost nothing and was able to drive at a much more consistant speed (tailgaters are mostly deterred if they're not headed for the next exit, but if they insist on staying back there anyway, they get slowed slowly and very gently).

Having complete statistics might make for a decent theoretical case for speed limiters (but probably a much better case for raising the actual driving standards and aggressively de-certifying drivers who insist on creating or worsening problems for others).
