I live in WA state and currently out on the road. Can I renew my medical card in another state while im out? I saw some truck stops that offer medical exams, how are those? Just worried it might expire before I get back home

As long as the examiner is on the FMCSA registry, it doesn't matter where you have it done. Even when I'm home, I go out of state to have it done.

That rule change effective in 2014 really has added to some of this confusion. I spoke to a guy this past weekend that swore the medicals were state issued now. Hopefully I set him on the right path.

You can get it in Katmandu as long as the examiner is registered. Look at all the people that come from all over and get a physical at what ever mega's terminal.

And you will likely be issued another physical anyway when trying to work for some such and such company.

But when it comes to coughing and handing over 30 dollars to keep your license in Tier one, those doctors are good to show up to as long they are under FMCSA.

Remember if you did have a DOT card that expired, go to the revenuer and fill out a document for Tier two temporarily until you get current. Then go back and fill out another document to Tier one. That way the state does not grind wheels over your precious CDL.

Yes; I live near Spokane: just renewed mine in Indianapolis and Washington state has an email/fax that you can submit it for self certification.. you will get a receipt number when you send it.... then, just make sure when you get back home to double check that your records have been updated.... easy:peasy! :)

I retired in the beginning of 2013. So I never really have had to deal with this medical card change issue all that much. I have however always subscribed to the philosophy of avoiding a problem before it becomes one. When I got inside that 90 day window when either my DOT card or CDL was about to expire I took care of it when I got home. The way I understand it the states give you some time before they take action against your CDL if the medical expires. I know Virginia gave me 30 days to fix mine. Today I don't drive anything. Folks this job is hard enough as it is. Take care of these situations BEFORE they become one. If your medical is going to expire on the 15th of Feb and it is the 20th of Jan and you are home why wait till the 15th? Get it took care of now.

There is no grace period for the medical card. An expired medical card is an unqualified driver. Your state may have a delay in reporting the downgrade of your license but it's up to them. If it expires and gets downgraded before your get the physical done you will have 45 days to reapply for your CDL and not have to retest.

Yep. Once that medical expires you can not drive a CMV. However the thrust of my comment was to take care of the medical way before this becomes a problem. Another thing to consider is what are you going to do if your medical expires in 3 days and a problem presents during a physical on the road you can't fix? Your screwed in that situation. People that wait until their medicals are almost to expire to get new physicals are asking for problems at some point.
