Was looking to update my previous post, where I was crying and sniveling about my truck going into that de-rate mode again, but I'll just hijack this one (with apologies).

For various reasons, I was unable to get my truck into a shop to correct the problem, and today I managed to talk the local Cat dealer (they now are supposed to work on heavy equipment only), into hooking up to my ecm. Two codes,
    (1) Active code for fuel temp.
    (2) Active code for turbo,

    (1) The Cat techs seemed to think that the fuel wire caused the fuel temp code, and although I am no tech, I think they are right.
R and R the old sensor, and code was still there, it just wouldn't go away!
Shortly after purchasing, and hooking the wire up, my check engine light came on, and pretty much stayed on the whole time.
Today I had removed the wire before leaving the house for Cat, and the check engine light remained on. The first tech was stumped, and called in for help, and another tech, and they finally were able to make the code go away.
Wondering if the resistor may have been hooked up wrong in my wire.

(2)The turbo code didn't give up easily either, it showed some sort of error code, and after going into the main computers in the shop, they found that my ecm needed to have a new file flashed into it. They actually had to download that file onto the laptop that they hooked to my ecm.

Before letting them hook to my ecm they had to assure me that they wouldn't change any of the up-rates that I had done to it recently, and after bobtailing back home, (about 8 miles), I did gain my boost back to the MBN normal of about 30 psi, and also the power seems to have returned.

I think that IF I do decide to put boost, and fuel wires back on, I will purchase some from a company, like the one in Atlana, rather than from someone on ebay.

    The saga continues..........

You having the work done in L. C., or Deridder? Made the round to Greg Hoffpauir's, and Cat, but didn't go by Atteberry, or Martin, I know they were all pretty busy, Greg and Steve at Atteberry both said two weeks before they could look at mine.

You were running a boost wire too?

For a very short time, 550,
then I learned from you that it was hurting, rather than helping. Tempted to try the regulator trick, then if that works, MAYBE put the boost wire. A little leery, now though, since I've read where a couple of guys noticed elevated soot levels.

I had way to much soot in mine with it but thats thanks to the injectors too. You cant run the boost wire on the MBN, fuel temp yes but not the boost or everytime you get on it the ecm will freak and de-rate. The air regulator doesent always work on them..... Just try the fuel wire alone, it should work good.

    droy Thanks this.

First of all,the fuel temp wire is not hard at all to make if you use the right resistor,I always use a 100ohm flameproof resistor, and it does'nt matter which way it is installed.I know,I have made a hundred of them.Second,do NOT put the boost wire back on your truck,on the MBN that throws an event code for high boost, your ecm will STAY derated until the event code is cleared with ET,and you need factory passwords to clear that event code. That is probably what file they had to download to their laptop.

    droy Thanks this.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread but I'm a little confused about which cat motors are ok to start with and which aren't. I want a cat powered truck and I've raced cars for years so I'm not scared to play with a motor. It seems most of the mods are external anyway except for the cams which I'm guessing are overhead in that motor?
Is that correct? I'm looking at several KW's in the 2004-6 range with low mileage. Can these motors be successfully modified to achieve good performance and fuel economy? Are these motors all made around the 3406e platform? No one I talk to seems to know that. I would be most concerned with fuel mileage first and power second.

Oh Droy, I have a good friend that lives in Iowa Louisiana. His name is Gene and his call is w5gap. I've been talking to him for years on ham radio. I think he owns a TV and Appliance store there.
