Same here. Finally gettin this old KW in decent shape mechanically and like you said she's proven herself. But with this old faded paint she don't look as good as she really is.

Now I spent several years in the body shop business when I was younger. I know my way around with a paint gun. But I keep staring at all these rusty old rivets covering lots of real estate and it takes what little motivation I had and tosses it right out the window.

And the judge is right (ain't she always?), that paint scheme would rock on sweet Pete like yours.

 

I am not an expert by any means. Try this at your own risk. Faced with years of salty corrosion around the rivets, I tried many different things. Neighbor who restores motorcycles suggested taking a piece of black vacuum tubing and putting it on a bolt that had the head cut off. Secure it to a drill and then put a dab of polishing compound on the end. The tubing is about the same size as the head of the rivet. 4 seconds of polishing and the corrosion disappeared. The same principle as what a dental hygienist uses to polish your teeth. Only used a dab of marine 3M polishing compound and the areas around the rivets and the rivets shined like a new dime. You may experiment with other polishes.

 

@wore out your truck is fine, man you beat yourself up over that thing, it's in excellent shape for it's age...

Not many Peterbilts I've driven from the late 90s to late 2000s had frames that clean.

She's got alot of potential.

 

Hmmmmmm.... I may have to try that. The idea of hand-sanding all these suckers is what turns me off about the whole deal. That and the downtime.

 

U could probably use a Dremel Tool with their vast selections of Bits to cleanup those Rivets

Anti-seize and pipe dope. Two compounds, that no matter how careful I am, seem to have a blast radius of about 6' every time I take the lid off. Today was no exception.

What kinda Lid 51? Pop off or Threaded

 

Threaded with the brush attached to the cap. Both products. It doesn't matter how careful I am, I wind up with it everywhere.
