I've heard not to leave a car running while fueling up. Is that the same when fueling up a reefer, should I cut the reefer off when fueling it up?

Won't hurt anything. Keep it running, especially if you have a sensitive load on. I wouldn't want to risk it not starting for whatever reason. Just my 2 cents.

Diesel isn't as volatile as gasoline. You're absolutely fine to leave the reefer running while fuelling.

No spark plugs....you'll be alright leaving it running.
TravR1, Bean Jr., Crude Truckin' and 1 other person Thank this. -
As has been said, the reefer running will not cause anything but a mild shaking of the trailer. However if you are sensitive to this all it takes is a second to flip the master switch off. If your unit is a problem child you are going to know by the time you first fill it then you take it to thermal king to get fixed. Then just flip the master switch back on. Most units will keep the settings.Crude Truckin' and Jdm5jdm5 Thank this.

The only time it might be an issue is if it is literally almost running on fumes. The agitation could introduce air or sediment into the fuel pickup system. But you should never run a tank below half IMHO so it should never be an issue.

I'm going to quote that comment to amplify it. Most reefer tanks are small. If your pulling a -10 load in 100+ degree weather its going to suck up fuel very fast. The bottom of those tanks are full of trash and crap. If you run a reefer out of fuel it sometimes will quit before the tank actually empties. When this happens unless you are a mechanic and know how to do a fuel filter replacment you are going to have to get help. It is what it is. It don't matter how much starting fluid you use because the filter is clogged as is the fuel inlet going to it. Moral of the story? NEVER EVER ALLOW THAT TANK TO RUN OUT OF FUEL. Also measure the level by eyeballing it. NEVER trust those fuel gauges.

Just thinking about fueling...(slight threadjack)
Once upon a time, there were FULL SERVICE truckstops. Attendant at the fuel island would ask you how much. You walked inside, ordered 'the Special', called mama on the payphone, ate, paid for the fuel, tipped the attendant for fueling and washing your truck, and hammered out.
"How much did the truck wash cost, Six?"
It was free! The special and a beverage was $5! In fact, the most expensive part of the whole ordeal was the calling cards. I guess those really were the good Ol days.
Man, you'd go driving along, and hear some sweet girl on the radio, telling you what the special was, how much fuel was, what exit they were at...etc. The thing I haven't figured out all of these years was who the heck was eating all of that banana banana banana pudding. Give me apple pie heated and a scoop of ice cream. Keep the baby food and wafers.
Yeah, there were buffet joints, but I always liked the specials. 1 plate. That's enough. You can't expect to pig out and drive. Well, I couldn't.Toomanybikes, foggy, wore out and 2 others Thank this. -
I guess we all used to park on the fuel island...Blackshack46, Sirscrapntruckalot, wore out and 3 others Thank this.
