hi I’m relatively new to trucking . I have a rolloff truck with a njdep number to haul garbage . I see a lot of dumptrucks and dump trailers with another number that I don’t know . Its a three digit number . For example it would be like nj-123 . Does anybody know what this number is ? Thanks tom

Probably for identification purposes in the rock quarries/asphalt plants.

When I drove dump truck, we would check in the quarry by the CB. for example, if WalMart ran dump trucks, One of the trucks would have letters and numbers at the top of the tailgate, like WM1. The dispatcher would call the trucks out of staging yard by these numbers. You would know that WM1 was WalMart 1. Most of the dump trucks were owner operators. They would take the initials from the name on the truck and the numbers would be from how many trucks that company had.

The NJ-124 number is a waste transport permit nunber. You may see it along with a bunch if other numbers, all with a state abbreviation in front, it is for transporting waste soil through some states. Some states like PA require a decal, others require just the permit number be displayed on the truck.

Yes they are absolutely correct. Along with my 3 otr trucks I recently(last July) started running 2 belly dumps and a end dump locally with some old iron attached. It is used 4 identification purposes on the load tickets. Everything is done by weight and you have several bills per day. My trucks are VC001,VC002,VC003. Make it easy for all involved same as a BOL on the road. I might be carrying the load. Yet the contract is for another local carrier, going to a certain project that might be ran by a different contractor, and plus picked up from a yard, pit, plant also that has 2 keep track of hundreds of loads per day. Relatively messy and handwritten system at times that depends on that simple number. Lol
