4 weeks ago my school allowed us to test for our CDL in parts. Rather than wait until we completed all our courses, they tested us on CDL pre-trip. I passed and my CLP was stamped and signed by a state examiner. I also tested with a state examiner that day.

2 weeks ago, I tested with a state examiner for my skills test. I posted the outcome of that test so I will not go into details about that.

Today, 2 weeks later, I practiced all the two weeks until today. My chest, shoulders, arms and legs hurt so bad right now. I was ready to re-test for the skills portion of my CDL tomorrow. Upon roll call today, we were informed that no testing for CDL will happen tomorrow. In fact, all prior CDL testing is now void. We’ll have re-take all portions of the CDL again and our current CDL is now void because the state examiner stamped my CLP that I had passed the pre-trip portion of the CDL test. I’ll have to retake my CLP exam.

The school stated that they had permission from the state but the Feds told the school they aren’t allowed to test us this way. I’m now in school for 2 more weeks (given I can pass all test) and I may not be able to test for the CDL an additional month to 2 months because the school is back logged with students waiting to take their CDL test.

All total, I could spend as much as 9 months just to get my CDL. This is insane. However, my hands are tied. I’ve spent way to much money to attend this school, well over $10,000, to quit right now. I had two job offers which I was supposed to start in 2 weeks. But to go another month or 2? I’m so depressed and angry right now. To pay as much as I’ve paid to attend a school that claims to be the best school only to be set back like this is beyond words other than profanity. Did I mention that I spent $10,000 for 6 months of schooling that has now turned into 7-9 months? Again this is insane and must have sucker written all over my face right now. Mega carriers train drivers in 4-6 weeks. But me, I’ll be the driver that claims it took me 7-9 months. I’ve heard that their some students that have been in this school for a year and still do not have their CDL. Now given these students have had a difficult time passing range testing, but an entire year? I must be really stupid for making the choice to come to this school.

Well, if you finally pass, go with a company that has tuition reimbursement. At least you can get a few thousand dollars of your tuition money paid back directly to you.

    Man, this sounds awful!

When I got mine in 05 I remember it being as easy as showing up with learners permit, followed by 8 hours in class to get school issued air brake endorsement, then 18 hours 1 on 1 in a truck with 4 half day courses for General stuff, hos, securement etc. Then you drive down to DMV in their truck. Your instructor waits, you pass, then go drop truck off at the school and goto the pub and buy your instructor a beer. Maybe 3 weeks total and $1800 (that was for the "middle" package)

Something is wrong with your school, like maybe they lost their 3rd party accreditation. I am a former Pennsylvania CDL examiner and even with the recent rule changes nothing on the Federal level says you can't take your practical exams in multiple parts. In fact, if that were true and you apply your school's logic, then every time someone failed one part of the test they would have to start all over again.

There is a Federal regulation concerning the practical part of the CDL exam that states you must demonstrate proficiency in each part (pass) before you can test the next part, meaning you have to pass the pre-trip before taking the skills exam and then pass the basic control skills before the on-road portion of the exam.

I would make a call to your state licensing agency, ask for the CDL program manager and explain what happened. Ask them why your CLP would no longer be valid. I am going to bet it has to do with either the paticular state certified examiner losing their qualifications or your school losing their certification as a third party test site. The only other reason I can think for your permit being invalidated is if more than 6 months has passed since you first obtained it. CLPs are limited to 6 month durations in many states, may even be Federal now. That I'm not sure of.

I rather not say the name of the school. But I will name the school once I’m officially done with this school.
