Pre-trip inspection after a post trip requirements

to my knowledge, and I was corrected on this a few months ago, if it is equipment the same driver drives every day, only the post trip is required to be logged. So, he should be good. If the equipment is shared among several drivers then a pre-trip is required.

 

It probably depends on company policy. I'm sure there is a requirement for a minimum of 15 minutes on-duty, not driving for a vehicle inspection (which is usually the pre-trip) but it will vary company to company.

My company is 15 minutes on-duty, not driving at the beginning of the day for pre-trip, then on-duty, not driving for however long the post-trip takes (which for me is always 3 minutes, exactly, lol).

Check the regulations for logging. I doubt it being electronic changes the law.

 

What do you think? He's falsifying his logs. You are really asking if that's acceptable?

Or are you asking what everyone thinks he can get away with if he gets audited?

Just follow the rules and you won't have problems.

 

§396.13 Driver inspection.
Before driving a motor vehicle, the driver shall:

(a) Be satisfied that the motor vehicle is in safe operating condition;


Can you be satisfied that the motor vehicle is in safe operating condition without any on duty time at all? Can you be satisfied, without a single second of on duty not driving time, that you still have your wheels attached to your trailer, the lights haven't bee stolen, the rear doors haven't been opened, or straps on the flatbed cut by some miscreant, etc?

To me this question seems relatively self explanatory, but perhaps not.

 

The topic of how much time must be logged for pretrip and post trip inspections has been beat to death in various threads. There is no specified minimum time in the regulations. It seems that every time this topic comes up in a thread some posters try to impose either their company's policy or their own personal feelings as if it is the rule of law. It may take some drivers longer to be "satisfied" than others. So be it.

If he is logging a post trip inspection as you described, to me it is completely reasonable that he would not need to log another in the morning before leaving. Personally, in my remarks at the end of the day when I do a post trip inspection, I just note "Pre-Trip/Post-Trip". While I do conduct a brief walk around each morning before pulling out, that does not take but a minute. I can glance at my tires and do a visual on the king pin ( and rear doors if I had them) very quickly.

If you have parked for your break and will be leaving in the same truck and with the same trailer, then isn't your post trip inspection as a practical fact also your pre trip inspection? If you were picking up a different trailer or changing trucks, then perhaps the scenario would be different.

 

I go by the valid inspection in the past 24 hrs rule..

 

How about the quick look around during a fuel stop? How do you log a mid trip inspection ?? #### them elogs all to heck !!

 

What do you mean how do you log it? As on duty of course. Why is this so difficult for people?
