I cant understand why all the big fleets want good mpg but dont put apu's on the trucks. They would pay for themselves in a years time
-
Because not every company can afford to put $13,000 APU's on 1,800 trucks all at once.
Here, I'll do the math for you. It's $23,400,000 -
LMAO nice try not 13 grand more like 7 or 8 and if they have 1800 trucks than they should be able to afford it. How much are they paying on diesel every month??
-
Good point, $14,400,000 isn't a lot of money at all.
They pay a lot on diesel, which might be why they can't just cough up $14 million.
Not to mention they bought something like 700 brand new trucks to beat the new emissions standars a while back, many of which aren't even in service. I'm sure that cost them quite a bit. But if having 1800 trucks means they should have $14 million just sitting around to spend at their leisure, why don't all Swift, JB Hunt, and Crete trucks have them? And I've seen the math where people have tried proving they'd pay for themselves in a year's time--then I reminded them they're supposed to actually be driving the truck, not sitting in truck stops idling 24 hours/day. -
OH I AGREE, but in the winter and dead of summer you need heat/ac i hear so many companys that let the drivers roast in the truck for idle time. You dont get good rest when you have to take a break and it is 90 out and you cant idle. They have many uses, dont have to plug in your batteries never go dead and the driver has comfort. No matter how you drive you still need sleep and it should be good sleep not sweating or freezing to death.mikroos5 Thanks this.

I'll agree with you on all of that, but I won't hesitate to idle my truck if I feel the need to. A company this big is only going to look at the bottom line, not the happiness of their drivers (which they don't realize affects the bottom line).
-
That is sad too, most give you the mpg bonus and all that idle time kills you. I am not one of those guys who just runs the truck so i can burn my pretty lights. In the spring and fall and even in summer up north i dont idle but you go to vegas and such you will not last 1 hour in the sleeper before you are cooked.

not all trucks have apu's, they werent installing them when i got my ac/dc converter. also i been requesting a apu for a very long time, and finally i got permission from head mechanic to do it since it was not a permanent connection. my big mistake was i should of gotten it in writeing.

Right before i left Roehl, i was told that if your truck had over 350k miles on it you will NOT get an apu put on that truck. That is the cutoff evidently. You will have to wait til you change trucks before hoping for an apu if you are over the 350k.
Mine had 363k on it, I was like #### this is awful. I gotta drive this thing another 300k before I might be able to get issued another truck with an apu when mine is put out of service? LOL.Last edited: Dec 12, 2008
