You can make a careful choice of what freight type you want, Tanker, flatbed, van, reefer etc. Some are better than others in different ways.

Dayton to me equals heavy lift out of that airbase nearby. Lots of goodies head that way from around the midwest.

You will have to learn how to sleep when necessary according to HOS. And there will be times you will hate the day you got into driving now and then. It rains when it pours. But if you climbed upgrade long enough and hung in there you will see the sun.

When the payroll piles up, save as much as you can. You will not be trucking forever. It's an opportunity.

I am mildly interested in the details of you CCW, We call those CHL's here in my state.

Trucking keeps the USA going. And that usually means the dispatch will have you load here and there and everywhere. Once in a while as a reward you will be given several choices of a plum load. There will be a great deal of pressure on you to hurry up and go. You can only go what the HOS will let you do. Anything in excess of that means you are running illegally. And if you get caught or have god forbid an accident doing that... it's all on you. It's your job to preplan a trip so that you will make the appointment assigned to you on time and to recognize when you are running late and have a new appt made before it's too late to make amends.

School is easy. Anyone can do school and get a CDL. But.. the real learning will be paid by you your first year in blood, sweat and things you break. Hopefully you don't break things or hurt people. And if you stick it at least a year, you will understand that increasingly you can write your own ticket and work where you like given enough stable history.

Remember to add civil liability of at least half a mil to your insurance, I think it's 15 dollars a month or so depending on your situation. That way if you do hurt or kill someone or someones... you will have a fighting chance at the courthouse. Don't forget to purchase and maintain your USCCA insurance, a few months ago they indicated the coverage is good for any kind of self defense problem, gun, knife, fists and the like. You may be going into places a little more dangerous than most and can use that insurance if someone tried to pick a fight with you. (Don't think they wont...)

    Great info thanks..
I'm coming into this clear headed. Ready for the challenges. I've been contemplating this career for over a decade and feel truly motivated and mature enough to be successful and ready for the responsibility. I'm not desperate employment wise. Its truly something I've wanted to do for a long time and the desire has never gone away.

My personality has always been that of one that doesn't mind being alone for periods of time. I find solace in it oftentimes. I travel and roam as it is anyway. Being a bachelor w/no kids alleviates the complexity of the family component that many in this line of work are faced with.

I see the leverage I will have working anywhere seeing everywhere long as I maintain a safe driving record, gain and display high skills, persevere the ups and downs of the game and be cool to work with.

My CCW.. U can pm me

and see what they have to offer and judge facilities in person. I got ball rolling to see if Im eligible for sponsorship through government. Thirdly, I submitted applications to a few trucking companies that provide sponsorship just to see what they come back with and have ready as other option. The feedback I got from most were contracts to unfavorable to consider. The one that I was most interested in has overall favorable reviews and respect and is interested in me also. Shool lagging on producing my transcript is dragging out moving forward with formal offer with them. Another new dynamic in play is a local temp to hire courier position came my way I couldn't turn down that is giving me some large straight truck experience running daily regional. Cool beans..generating extra revenue to self finance if want cause not one to really lean on gov anyway. Like to work for mines even if delays things a bit. Sweeter if earned off the sweat of my brow is how I always feel. Will post again as things move along.

    Peace:cool:

Oh gotta say thanx again to all great info out here. Leaning more towards outside school though I can find company that offers layover, detention, and no touch. Def no touch. Can create a workout for myself. Want all my energy for running my whole 11 with good concentration cause I wanna stay out on road long as possible. At least one month at a time.

I finally got paperwork to needed for the main school I'll consider to be sponsored by at the moment. In the mean time I landed full time local courier with FedEx ground. Maybe I can work my way up and get CDL through them. If not at least I got my DOT physical and med card courtesy of them and higher pay than previous job to speed up savings goal to self pay. 1st day orientation today. More to come..

Dont know yet. Will find out today. They have the full array of vehicles there: the daycabs, straight trucks, step vans, and sprinters. Could be any or all minus the daycab. Just gonna be humble and coachable and take advantage of every opportunity to get ad much training as possible.
