What I was saying is STOP , LOOK , LISTEN Before you jump. every trucking company is different with there own personality and so do you.Where one company may not be good for me might not suite you.

Why do you think that you need to differentiate between local and otr? Sure, otr is gone for weeks at a time and local is home almost every, if not every night. We both perfrom the same functions. Did you even think to ask if he ever worked otr?

The big difference is a few notable items. Local. Most are paid by the hour. The only true way to be paid fore yor time. Local companies also provide better benefits to the employee and their family. They also seem to get you home daily or a few times during the week.

Benefits can go both ways but the local driver seems to make out better.

Prove me wrong if you can. The way I see it, knowing long haul trucking, you can see the difference in the pay, benefits and time at home.

I don't know why anyone would want to go otr when working local can provide a better way of life for most of us.

    Did I miss something?

I think he has provided excellent points. Can anyone disagree with his thoughts?

Unless you come off the road to work as a city driver then you don't know what the long haul trucker and wife's go trough.
I have done them both and yes the local money is good benefits maybe Most of the time I have made more money over the road. Union driver seem to do a little better. I have come from a big teamster family.
My dad retired from Manley truck lines K.C.Kn.(city driver 30 years)
A brother retired from TOX . (Yard hustler ) And a brother that died in a CF truck in St. Louis. I personally didn't like the Teamster's it just wasn't my bag.
Local and over the road are completely different.Just like you take a Teamster road driver and put him in a produce or cattle truck . There as different as daylight from dark.
Were all working for the same thing to take care of our love ones. Just some of us just do our trucking in different way. And I have never had to kiss someones ##### to keep a job.(Teamsters)
Happy Holidays friend and you keep on trucking your way. Danny
PS I had a brother also retire from Yellow K.C.Mo. (Team Driver)
I have a son that owns a small trucking company in central Arkansas also. Me and the wife has 70+ years trucking. and together six plus million plus miles.
We have pulled a reefer , van, doubles and triples, tanker , catlttle truck and a few of them hog. Explosives for tri state,Heavey haul for belger heavy haul K.c. Mo. house hold furniture for No. American.I have worked the docks for Wheellock bros.,Manley and Graham truck lines and three years for Emory air freight. So I thank i have earned my say in the trucking industries. Als been in 6 or 7 truck strike.Including the one in 1973 friend.I could tell you stories that would scare the hell out of you.And your trying to tell me about trucking. Lol Merry Christmas friend. Danny, Sandy

Simple over the road driving is in the blood. It's a way of life.In the 1950's I use to lay in bed at night and listen to the big truck wheels singing down the highway.I always new from the time I was seven I would be a long haul trucker. When I turned 18 I was trucking from Kansas City to St. Louis for Bob Dewey.:biggrin_25525:

I believe Danny thoughts is the GUY has no clue in OTR. Which I tend to believe also. Plus I lost all respect for Locals cause of majority of them has a Ignorant attitude, which 074344 has shown on here. Seen them think they own every door at a shippers and after seeing someone setting up for a door which they were assigned and goes and cut them off and ets upset if you say anything. Or see them drop a trailer and do many things I never even seen a newbie do, forget to remove the Airlines before pulling out from a trialer. I rather stay OTR than join the Ranks of these Idiots.

I think it is just as hard to find a decent local outfit to work for as it is to find a good OTR outfit.

I could sit here for days telling war story's about local companies that burned up or just burned their drivers. And I have never been layed off by a OTR company or had my hours cut back to avoid paying OT. By the way, I now work as a local driver, but still do regional work also. But when I was working OTR, I made more then just about any local driver in my area makes except maybe your most senior Union driver. And they better look at what is happening to other unions and realize that the union gravy train will be a thing of the past.:yes2557:
