I am just starting out. I am trying to find a company that will train me and give me a job. I am hearing "not in your area". The problem with local companies is that they are either not hiring or they want experienced drivers. None of the companies I've talked to will tell me if I have a better chance if I pay for my own schooling. I'm about 2 1/2 hours from Seattle, but only 10 minutes from Portland, OR.
I'm 38 and ready to get to work. I have no felonies misdemeanors, dui's or tickets. I have 1 not at fault accident. My dad was was a truck driver for 38 years and my mom drove for 9 years. My dad retired when I was 16, and I never got the chance to go OTR with him. This would be my opportunity to connect. I've hung sheetrock for the last 8 years so I know I can unload a trailer as fast as anyone if necessary(if that would give incentive to hire me).
Anyone have any suggestions? Is this just the worst time to try to bust in on the scene or what?

You might try Watkins and Shepard Trucking out of Missoula, MT. They have a terminal in Vancouver, WA and they provide 30 day training in Missoula.

Thank you B-rad. I'm working with them now. Can I get your name so I can tell them who referred me?

If you're looking at local work, it's not going to happen. Most are looking at OTR drivers only for now. Cut backs are forcing local positions to be eliminated, and/or filled by senior drivers.
Freight is extremely slow in your neck of the woods right now. The economy is further hampering things. You've actually picked a bad time for this move. As over 10,000 (probably more) other out of work people turn to trucking jobs, as a means to fend off bankruptcy and other monetary issues.Native Dancer Thanks this. -
they are OTR. They just happen to have a terminal here.

danc694u, do you think they're gonna take my 4 grand and kick me to the curb with an empty promise of having a job afterwards? Did I make a mistake by saying I had the money and don't need financing?
