Hello, I am debating coming in the to the trucking "community" (dam I hate that word). I am 39 years old, and in the construction trade laid off. Due to the economy, I'm not sure how long it will take for it to recover. I am wondering what companies are out there that will provide schooling, and working it off in trade. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Gene
Looking for advice

Three companies come to mind.
Schneider National
Roehl
Swift
With these companies there is usually a 1 to 2 year indentured servitude contract required. In the event you drop out or quit they will still want to be paid back the $3500 to $5000 bucks the training was worth.
Be aware the economy is in a downward spiral and trucking is getting clobbered as well. Trucking companies are laying off drivers and even going out of business altogether. As a trainee you will be competing with many veterans for the jobs that are left out there.
Oh yeah I think UPS also takes trainees. If you could get in as a loader or unloader you may get your foot in the door and they may offer to pay for your truck training down the road. -
Just an FYI Schneider and Swift have shut down their schools for now till business get's better.
-
Swift shut down their schools too? Schneider did it awhile ago, but this is the first I heard of Swift doing it too.

Yah I was going to go on the 31st but they called and said they were not hiring right now, and stoped training.
Native Dancer Thanks this. -
I can't tell you what companies are good or bad because I am a newb. I live in AZ and SWIFT is here so I am going with them. You need to read the contract and know you will probably have to survive on meager pay for at least three months.
Lots of people will tell you SWIFT sucks, SWIFT Drivers "can't drive" etc. but they do get you into the industry.
If you get hired they will take around 60 bucks a month out of your check and they pay 1/2 of the training cost if you stick around for the contract.
If you are interested go to the SWIFT website and fill out an app or call the 1-800 number. Once you are assinged a recruiter they will send you an outline of the deal.
I am in a similiar situation i.e. economy but I also have a background in the military. I've been monitoring this site for a while because I am also in a jobless situation. I have always wanted to be a LHT. I think if you are willing to bust some arse it will pay off long-term. If you think you'll walk into a 70k a year position forget it.
As with the military I think becoming a success in trucking is about attitude. The good posts from experienced drivers remind me of successful senior enlisted because they take pride in what they do and they are good at what they do! Walk into any company with a sense of entitlement and you'll get screwed for sure, walk in with a grin and bare it attitude, pride and sense of professionalism and you can make trucking a good career.
Good Luck
I was blue becaue I had no shoes but as I walked down the street I saw a man with no feet. God's Speed. -
Millis might be one to consider adding to your list since two are off the list now.
-
swift set me up for training on jan 8th, but millis just accepted me also for feb. going to go with them i think, although swift can start me sooner millis might be better in the long run
-
Millis quit hiring students last summer.
(according to one of their recruiters) -
call them and make sure -
I was chatting with one of their recruiters who made it a point to tell me time and time again that they do not hire new drivers aymore (right now).
