As a flatbedder, starting salary was $1610 bi-weekly if I remember correctly. BUT, there is some sort of glitch in Roehl's payroll system so when taxes are calculated they are calculated as if I the driver makes $1610 weekly. Because of this I ended up paying nearly $1000 a month in federal taxes. Thankfully, Florida doesn't have an income tax. Now granted, it all comes back in the tax return but according to payroll the only way to get around this glitch is to claim 6 exemptions.

So, each pay check ended up being around $900 ($450 weekly) not including my GI Bill benefits. This is good at first because you'd be hard pressed to pull that in as a new driver. Where you start loosing money, however, is in tarp pay, Canada pay, New York Pay and stop pay. Honor drivers aren't paid for any of those. It's all included in your pay.

Again, I really think the HP is a great idea and an honest attempt by Roehl to help transitioning veterans but the individual should look their specific situation and determine whats best. There is no promise of making more money either way you go, but if you can afford it, mileage may work out better in the long run. I liked being salary, but am happy to be on mileage now.

Doc, Im not retired. If I had to choose this minute, I'd say milage. But, I was told you can go with the salary and switch to milage when ever you wanted. The catch, you can never go back to salary.

Dr Venture, Thanks for the simple, clarifying answer regarding honor program pay without the gi bill. Every other driver I have ever asked had BS 'ed around with it. And now I know why. I have heard of drivers that have come off of it after only a couple of months. Its really only good with the GI bill, which roehl lets fill the "pay gap". Without it its just not worth it.

$150 a day, for a seven day week = $1050 a week. Not bad. If you are single and claim no exemptions that's still over $700 a week after taxes.

Even with the various other pays, I've been lucky to clear $600. So even if you don't use your GI Bill you are doing better than me right now.

Before, there was no reason for me to stay out past 11 days, since that was the minimum for full salary but there was nothing extra for staying out longer. Now, it seems a lot more fair.
