    Hi Folks,

I'm sure it is no secret to anyone reading this that there is a demand for new drivers. So, new safe and responsible drivers who provide an immediate tax advantage to the business should be even more in demand, right?

I’ve found limited recent info on the WOTC topic here, so I thought I might offer some potential help for others in a similar situation who are considering a move into a driver role. If anyone reading this falls into the target groups in the attachment I've provided, then read on. For me personally, I'd like to find out what companies out there would be willing to negotiate terms.

    Snapshot of my situation:

    - Honorably discharged Vet (Army)
    - Unemployed (> 6 months)
    - Already have ClassA CLP through home state (1/2018)
    - Already have DOT physical with drug screen (2/2018)
    - No accidents, dings, etc on record within past 5 years
    - Based out of Charlotte, NC

***Seeking trucking company sponsorship through CVTA or NAPFTDS certified school (read: my new employer foots the bill) or company with own 3rd party certified in-house driver training program (read: my new employer foots the bill) to gain my CDL Class A and hit the road.

Now, I know there are plenty of companies out there offering tuition reimbursement for schooling. I don't have the cash and the credit financing terms out there for non title IV school funding is just ricockulous so neither are a consideration for me.

I'm seeking recommendations for companies who are willing to negotiate terms/make a business decision that just makes sense: As a member of the target groups identified in the attachment below, I bring with me up to a $5600 tax credit for their business during the next 2 years I help drive whatever I'm hauling for them from point A to B. Since the tax credit is both income and hours based - the more they pay me and the longer they pay me - the bigger the tax credit for the company I hang my hat at. I've already confirmed eligibility through my state's Dept of Commerce/Workforce Connections Division. All my future employer has to do is take 10 mins to create a free account and submit the paperwork within 28 days of my hire date (I've already filled out my piece on that).

So, does this translate to qualifying for the hiring bonuses I see floating around out there? Increased pay during training? Increased guaranteed pay? An air ticket vs. a bus ticket to travel to their in-house tng loc? Shortening of contract term/forgiveness of whatever dollar fig they associate with their in-house training or partnership with a school?

I don't yet know the answers to these questions, but I'd love to have a discussion with a trucking recruiter who "gets it" and can at least put me in contact with someone within the company authorized to negotiate a mutually-acceptable arrangement. Any thoughts, comments, complaints, or recommendations?

Thank you in advance from a "newb".

Where is your home location in Virginia? There are many state companies that hire newbies with veterans status, some with company sponsored schools, done you'll need your full cdl. Most here will suggest getting your full cdl because that will open up far more doors or opportunity.

Hey Gunner, thanks for responding. I see my part in in confusion creation. VA = Veterans Admin.

I'm based out of Charlotte, NC. Sponsorship for my full cdl is the goal. The tax-credit gained due to my status is a sweetener...

Couldn’t you use your post 9/11 GI bill to cover tuition for getting your Class A CDL? They cover costs plus pay you for attending. Or are you not worried about using you GI Bill and strictly want company paid training? My 2 cents, try and use your GI Bill to pay for an independent school, much better than being stuck owing a company money because they “trained” you for 3 weeks and got you your license.

You're making a simple process, complicated. There's company sponsored schools right there in North Carolina.
Schneider pays for cdl school and you're probably in a good location for Schneider Bulk which is the tanker division. Army vet @19d went with Schneider Bulk in North Carolina.

I’m pretty sure schneider has a get your cdl-training-everything in one stop-place for the box van devision but for the tanker (real money) I don’t believe so. I could be wrong though. But only do the company sponsored cdl license thing as a completely last resort. I mean like I’m homeless or bout to be type situation. Because I’m sure it will have some rules / lower pay for year or two, or contract/ or all.. type of bull crap you don’t want. Just use gi bill to pay for school. Some cdl schools have dorms also, so you can actually stay there while in school. Place I went was mon- thurs for 3.5 weeks, it had beds for 8 people. Some guys were not ex military of course and they had government somehow pay for everything, dorms, training, etc, etc.. basically once you find a school you wanna go to, just tell them your situation , whatever the case may be and they will help you get it payed for somehow. Trust me, they want you there bad and want that money bad. Lots of way to get it payed for actually. I went on weekend, sat and Sunday for 7 weekends. And boom mfers, I was a professional mf’ng truck driver with all endorsements. Professional in 14 days, cause I was that dangum good. Haha.. if use gi bill to pay for school the company you end up working for will still reimburse you for the amount the school was. Schneider gave me 200 a month, and I never payed anything.. lol.. loved that part. Where do you live? I live in Sanford NC.. I work for superior carriers now pulling tanks and I’m making fist full money now. I loved schneider not gonna lie, it’s actually a great company and tanker pays good but try to work at superior carriers. For example I just worked Monday 0500 to Wednesday at 1030 am and made 802 dollars. It’s rediculous how well they pay here. No matter what definitely pull tanks, will be 15k to 20k yearly pay difference I’m willing to bet vs dry van

You must consider the GI bill.

My spouse was a Vet and we used several of her monthly checks to pay her tuition at truck school outright leaning on my only income as support for everything at that time. Her GI Bill was kept safe until she went to a 4 year college.

Once we paid the school cash, the contract with FFE in terms of tuition owned etc (A early form of intdentured servitude or a promissary note promising to repay should she get fired, dismissed or quit within the year....) was moot. It's paid.

A company will definitely try to grab your 5600 and then manufacturer some excuse to dismiss you and that would be that. At that point you will discover that the school you thought you trained at is no good to the majority of the industry. If you ever had one at all in the orientation classroom in the back of the lot. "Annnnd it's gone"

Use a few months of your VA income check to build up straight cash you'rn self for your truck school tuition. Get the full CDL from the state you live in testing in a manual truck, not a auto. Get all the endorsements, get the TWIC (Not acceptable in Air force installations as of this year) and get the US Passport for canada etc. And then you go hire on to some company that appeals to you.

It's so worth being free in terms of this situation.

There is a little bit of dirty feeling so to speak to offer yourself and a pot of gold to a company as a painted lady strolls the corner to anyone who will hire her. The people's money that will be made to be taken as rapidly as the ink could be made to dry on the papers in your name. Then the next vet and the next vet and so on. Don't think they wont.

I hate to be so difficult. But get the pile of cash together whatever the tuition is you'rn own self, go to school and get the CDL A yourself when all of that is done and you are now a trucker in the eyes of your state and the US Government you will learn a total freedom to choose and hire on to most anyone anywhere in the USA PENDING Insurance limitations for people with no experience.

I wish I had got my cdl in NC instead of Louisiana, I had to transfer it after only having it 2 months. But I guess I had no choice since I was still in Army I’m Louisiana at time I went to cdl school. Can’t remember but for all my endorsements I’m sure it was around 200 bucks in NC. Did the guy asking about this say he has the post 911 gi bill? If he does then there’s nothing to figure out, find school near home and go

Some have regular gi bill, Montgomery gi bill, I had to switch mine over before I got out to post 911 or either I wouldn’t be able to do it and the schools only can take post 911 bill. So i hope he has the right one but maybe not
