We all know freight is down. Same all over. Always true in winter, but seems especially bad this year with the economic downturn. How long have some of YOU been sitting waiting for freight? I get to be home every week, and had to run home empty all the way from Mentor, OH (near Cleveland) this weekend.
How long are you sitting?

Wow a long DH. Freight is slow I go back out tomorrow I have sat as long as a week and a half

I have sat at home for up to 2 weeks. Nothing worth moving, and I know when I get to the other end, I will eventually wind up dh'ing home. Took a load down to the Carolinas out of Detroit, spent a week slowly creeping back towards Michigan while looking for freight. Before I knew, 5 days later, I was home with an empty trailer. Said screw it, signed up with Schneider as they have freight. No more sitting.

During the recession of 1974-75, my lease on auto parts hauling was canceled. I went to a reefer company and experienced sitting for two or three days in truck stops. It is very depressing as the cost of meals and motel rooms adds up, but the thought of paying for fuel to deadhead is also depressing.

Sadly, Schneider is apparently not hiring in Nebraska. I do get to be home every week, as I said... but there is a down side to our operation. We run to the northeast and back every week. (Last week I actually delivered near York, PA. Went to Mentor and the load had been cancelled.) If there is not a good chance of a backhaul from the northeast (and we do have a regular set of customers we do backhaul for to the Denver area), we don't take a load out. That means we don't get a paycheck AT ALL for that week. That happened over Thanksgiving week... the first time in three holiday seasons with this company that I had to sit home unvoluntarily.

Knock on wood, my last 2 wks out I didnt sit more than 3hrs waiting on a trip, last 3 wks have been between 2200 and 2500 miles. Hope they keep me going good. Now a few weeks ago when I was out, I did get a layover up in MD.

Freight is the slowest I've ever seen it. Usualy this time of year is kicken. I mean big time non stop till after christmas. Then is slowes till about march. This feels like a normal Feb. does. I just got one more thing to say. Stay out of the truck stops, eat out of your truck, and SAVE UP!............Peace
