I took a test to obtain a Florida class "D" license for a part time tow truck job a few years ago and recently renewed it due to expiration date, or so I thought... Florida no longer has a class "D", and the teller gave me an "E" instead of the "C" I may need for the rig I drive (a van with a 16' enclosed trailer) Was so tickled to be in & out of the DMV with no line to wait in, I didn't even realize this until last night. Been doing some research, and I believe I'm alright as the combo is under the 26,000 pound limit they refer to?

A class E is all you need as long as you don't haul a placarded amount of haz-mat or operate vehicle designed to haul over 15 passengers. For guidance you can search FLHSMV.gov.In the search box type in (driver license classes endorsements and restrictions)You can also search Florida statues 316.003(66)(vehicle definitions) and 322.53(license required, exemptions).Last thing,go to FMCSA.In the search box type in 383.91(vehicle groups and endorsements)

It's incredible how complicated the DMV regulations are. IMHO, everyone should be required to obtain a class A CDL. There would be no room for fuzzy restrictions, and those who never drove a big rig would at least have a better understanding of the safety issues.

    Many thanks! :biggrin_25525:
