I am concerned about this at ANY restaurant! What is really sickening to me, is to see the parents of these "little darlings" let them go up to a buffet by themselves. And IGNOR THEM. I've seen little kids, four or five years old at a buffet line, reach into food with their bare hands, scoop out a handful and put it in their mouths. Then, if they don't like it PUT IT BACK!
I agree about the telephones. And the reason folks don't bother to wash can be answered in one word: IGNORANCE!
Truckers health? Whats up with this?

HI BIG DON....
yeah it could be ignorance or just total laziness? it's like some of the other threads i read...folks that don't shower?
?? let me tell you, sometimes it gets nuts out here
when you pick up and del at weird hours, and showering is tough because you either can't find the truck stop you need,or parking is an issue, but after 2 days i'm ready for the hot water........
when i got trained,my trainer was a clean person, thank god! so i started out the right way....winter is another problem, coming out of a hot shower to 20 deg weather can put a clamp on the desire.
as for the kids doing that at the buffet, i can't say that i have seen that, i would let the MGR know...me and my girl don't do the buffets....only the ones we know and they are not at truck stops....
every time you go to a restaraunt it's like playing russian roulette....but, i have read that you can just as easily poison yourself at home.....
i had food poisoning once, and let me tell you this,it's not fun. it takes a long time to get over it.
so the end message is always this:WASH YOUR HANDS! AND PLEASE SHOWER WITH SOAP. thank you.
.........and lets not forget to brush our teeth!
best wishes to all....
even the scrooges out there!
mcr&deb......melanie Thanks this. -
Nothing like a good case of food poisoning when you are out on the road. I spent three days at a motel in Sterling Colorado one time, so sick I thought I was gonna die. But then I was younger and more stupid than I am now. Now, I'd just go ahead and die. . .

Being a nurse and trucker, I know what is around our anal areas. And I would for sure wash after going to the toilet. The e-coli is there and there are other things. I sure wouldn't want to get any of it on my hands. Plus not all toilets are auto flush, so who knows what someone else had on their hands when they flushed before me. And I'm sure the handles are not washed at all when the janitor cleans. I used toilet paper to flush the handle and after washing my hands, I used the paper towels where available to turn off the water and turn the door handle where there was one. I've seen how nasty some of the toilets are in truck stops and other places. So I took no chances. I am no longer trucking as you can see if you read about my chemo treatments. I can't even work at all. But I will go back into trucking if I get well enough to drive again, if my DAC report isn't messed up by Transam Trucking which medically terminated me while I was in the hospital, and to add insult to injury, they also terminated my insurance at the same time. And I found out that I have no recourse to sue them. As I didn't work long enough. You have to work for at least 1 year before sueing for wrongful termination. I was 6 months away. But I had no idea I was going to have Cancer. So here I am broke and having to take Chemotherapy which makes me very sick. I think the chemo is worse than the cancer. But back to the subject, truckers, do wash your hands after going. I agree with MCR..

20 Things You Didn't Know About ... Hygiene
Cleanliness is serious business; dirty hands killed a U.S. president
By Liza Lentini and David Mouzon
Provided by Discover magazine
1. Hygiene comes from the name "Hygieia," the Greek goddess of health, cleanliness and ... the Moon. Ancient Greek gods apparently worked double shifts.
2. The human body is home to some 1,000 species of bacteria. There are more germs on your body than people in the United States.
3. Not tonight dear, I just washed my hands: Anti-bacterial soap is no more effective at preventing infection than regular soap, and triclosan (the active ingredient) can mess with your sex hormones.
4. Save the germs! A study of over 11,000 children determined that an overly hygienic environment increases the risk of eczema and asthma. 5. Monks of the Jain Dharma (a minority religion in India) are forbidden to bathe any part of their bodies besides the hands and feet, believing the act of bathing might jeopardize the lives of millions of microorganisms. 6. It's a good thing they're monks.
7. Soap gets its name from the mythological Mount Sapo. According to legend, fat and wood ash from animal sacrifices there washed into the Tiber River, creating a rudimentary cleaning agent that aided women doing their washing.
8. Ancient Egyptians and Aztecs rubbed urine on their skin to treat cuts and burns. Urea a key chemical in urine, is known to kill fungi and bacteria.
9. In a small victory for cleanliness, England's medieval king Henry IV required his knights to bathe at least once in their lives -- during their ritual knighthood ceremonies. 10. That's their excuse, anyway: Excrement dumped out of windows into the streets in 18th-century London contaminated the city's water supply and forced locals to drink gin instead.
11. A seventh grader in Florida recently won her school science fair by proving there are more bacteria in ice machines at fast-food restaurants than in toilet-bowl water.
12. There's no "five-second rule" when it comes to dropping food on the ground. Bacteria need no time at all to contaminate food.
13. The first true toothbrush, consisting of Siberian pig-hair bristles wired into carved cattle-bone handles, was invented in China in 1498. But tooth brushing didn't become routine in the United States until it was enforced on soldiers during World War II.
14. Please don't squeeze the corncob. In 1935, Northern Tissue proudly introduced "splinter-free" toilet paper. Previous toilet paper options included tundra moss for Eskimos, a sponge with salt water for Romans, and -- hopefully splinter-free -- corncobs in the American West. 15. NASA recently spent $23.4 million designing a space-shuttle toilet that would defy zero gravity with suction technology at 850 liters of airflow per minute. That's a lot of money for a toilet that sucks.
16. In 1843, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. campaigned for basic sanitation in hospitals. But this clashed with social ideas of the time and met with widespread disdain. Charles Meigs, a prominent American obstetrician, retorted, "Doctors are gentlemen, and gentlemen's hands are clean."
17. Up to a quarter of all women giving birth in European and American hospitals in the 17th through 19th centuries died of puerperal fever, an infection spread by unhygienic nurses and doctors.
18. TV kills! University of Arizona researchers determined that television remotes are the worst carriers of bacteria in hospital rooms, worse even than toilet handles. Remotes spread antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus, which contributes to the 90,000 annual deaths from infection acquired in hospitals.
19. It is now believed President James Garfield died not from the bullet fired by Charles Guiteau but because the medical team treated the president with manure-stained hands, causing a severe infection that killed him three months later. 20. What on earth made them think manure-stained hands were remotely acceptable to treat anyone?
Whatever it comes down to, washing the hands, bathing and brushing the teeth are
necessary, there is no excuse not to perform these simple acts of hygiene.
Whether at a terminal, or a truck stop, keep clean!
I remember taking a shower in wyoming in winter, the trip from the shower to the truck was very memorable, and cold! But after so many days, you start to feel "grungy"...think about what others may be thinking as you go by,sheesh!
I keep a bottle of mouthwash on hand, comes in handy also......i hate to talk to anyone with morning breath....unless it's DOT!!
.........or a cop.
Best Wishes Ya'll........
and remember that the way you present yourself is the way the public
percieves you and the industry you represent.

Dew Frog- That kind of thing should be illegal. Why have insurance at all if you are not really insured for the first year, and worse than that can be fired for getting sick
?! My prayers are with you. I hope you get better soon. The world needs nurses and truckers, and the combination is really great! I am not trying to blow smoke, but there is some foreign Doctor/research scientist Hilda somebody who has proven that very large doses of whatever is in broccoli has been PROVEN to halt latter stages of bladder CA in its tracks. I used to not believe in so called alternative medicine, but don't feel that way at all anymore.
