I've had a IFTA and IRP audit. Yes, they do look for "route traveled". You don't have to be super accurate about it, but at least main roads so they can do a rough calculation against what you reported.

My auditor was actually pretty easy going. We weren't doing everything completely "by the book" but doing what worked best for us and is was accurate. Got a letter after the audit was over stating to keep with are current system and everything was ok, I kept that letter for future reference if needed. I got the feeling that if you were trying to do right, they cut you a lot of slack. They did call 2 weeks ahead of time so that gave me some time to go over everything and fix any loose ends.

There was exactly one fuel receipt that got lost somewhere. I knew it was missing but had hoped they didn't catch it. They did catch it, but even though the actual receipt was missing, it was reported, and they let me slide on it.

Your mileage may vary, depending on State and your particular auditor.

I never took notes or paid much attention what routes I was on while driving or odometer readings when I crossed state borders. Not because of safety concerns but because I did not want to bothered with such stupid, mundane tasks. I rather tried to accurately recreate the trip route by using Atlas or Google Maps.
At present time, I use Keep Truckin (ELD) and it has a feature for additional cost to show miles run in a given state/province. It does not state on its reports what routes where taken and on one occasion it erred on total miles run in Iowa. (by 5 miles), so it gave me a doubt whether I should trust it or not. I take the data from Keep Truckin reports and enter it to my own trip reports, for the purpose of IFTA reporting every quarter. It may be redundant but Keep Truckin trip reports are not adequate IMO as they don't show routes taken at all but only miles in a given state/province and gallons after you upload the fueling data. Keep Truckin will not do the filling for you, you have to enter the data in your state IFTA reporting online portal, if it is available.

Rand McNally will keep a log of every mile every state travled and you can print it out on a spreed sheet. Even the cheap $200 530 rand mcnally can do it

I get my miles off my Rand NcNally GPS since my odometer died on me.
I use a trip sheet and I fill in the big roads like interstates etc on it along with all other info required.I sign my trip sheet and I have been told all fuel receipts need truck number on it.Since I have only one truck I write it on there anyway and staple them together
