Is the tri-mag style mount prone to this kind of problem?

I don't know but with a 4 foot firestick, you only need on magnet.

See one of the issues in trying to troubleshoot something in a virtual world is a lack of information flow.

Yep I was just trying to ascertain if you suspected the tri-mag or mag mounts in general.

Sounds like portability is important to this fellow so mag mount is certainly one way to acheive that.

Most of those multi mag mounts use the firestick fire ring for coax connection. I have tried both the three and four mag mounts and the problem I had was where the coax connects under the mount. The connection always went bad there.

I was wondering if the OP was running power? I also had a problem with my Sirio mag mount when I tried to run a RCI 2970N4 through it. My SWR's went through the roof. The ground wasn't good enough through a mag mount. I had to go hard mount through the roof to get a better ground.

I've never had a problem getting a good ground with the two Wilson and one K40/K30 mag mount antennas I use on various vehicles.

Ok, first, 4 foot is short for CB bands. Is that particular Firestick antenna designed to be used without a load coil? Some antenna's do us a special internal design, especially the fiberglass ones. MOST large magnet mounts are designed to be inductively coupled as far as the ground plane goes, but NOT ALL! Double check the brand you have. The magnet could be designed for another radio band than CB too.

New York! Aren't radio waves unionized there? Maybe they're on strike. LOL

Sorry but the two bold statements are wrong.

Magnet mount antennas work on a capacitive coupling, not inductive coupling.

No magnet is design for other bands.

A third thing is that the 4 ft antenna is just a highly loaded antenna, nothing special inside.

That's an interesting point about the assertion that some magnet mounts not being designed for CB and inductive coupling to the ground plane. The several I have and use are all CB-rated by their manufacturers and work like advertised.

Edit: I see Ridgeline challenged the point while I was typing. That's interesting too :)

Actually, that is true, the coupling is capacitive. Late night, a lot of other stuff going on.

The capacitive reactance will be frequency sensitive, so make sure the mount is for CB bands.
