I learned at my interview today that line-haul drivers get paid per miles whereas P&D drivers get paid by the hour at OD. With that being said, can P&D drivers do as well as Line-haul drivers in terms of annual income? I know line-haul drivers are making 80-100k. Wondering if that it within the realm of possibility as a P&D driver?

I run linehaul and where I am, it’d be very difficult for a peddle driver to make what I am, considering we also get drop n hook pay as well as some other accessorial pay. I run one of our terminal’s shortest routes and gross $1500 a week, so it’d take a peddle driver every bit of his 70 hour clock to come close, knowing what the hourly pay is here. Linehaul is the easiest trucking job I’ve had, just bumping docks terminal to terminal. I don’t even have to break sets, just 53’ vans here. The peddle guys get to deal with all the traffic, city driving, customers, and touch the freight all day.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. Yea, at OD line haulers do better than P&D drivers. Believe they are earning about .62 cents per mile. For all the reasons that you just mentioned, line-haul is superior to P&D however I'd take P&D at OD as a stepping stone to line haul.DTP Thanks this.

Who do you drive for?

Yeah getting in the door is the key, but linehaul positions don’t open up nearly as often as P&D for many of the reasons I already stated so you may wait a while to get a shot. Peddle guys get injured too here and there lugging freight around, people get linehaul gigs and usually don’t give them up. The only physical work I do is dolly up and down and pull the pin. Hours are long either way but linehaul is the way to go. And working graveyard shift is nice, thought sleeping during the day would be the issue but it’s not at all.

Ok, thanks for the info and insight. My issue is I was offered a dock worker position at OD but it will be pay cut from my current job in sales. For someone without a CDL this is the best way to get one's foot in the door of OD and eventually get into their CDL training class and become a driver. The challenging part is the unknown. I don't know how long I'll have to wait to get into the class. The fact that it's a brand new terminal and that it's growing should only play in my favor but there is still that unknown element of time nonetheless.DTP Thanks this.

Made 70k last year in city. Just m-f. You can pickup a linehaul run on the weekends though. ill be doing that this year so 80k for city is very possible.
-
Nice. Yea p&d is nice in that it's typically day shift. If you can also pick up a line haul run on the weekends that's even better. What kind of hours are you working per week to reach that 70k mark?
-
When its busy 55 hours. They usually keep us under 60. When its slow 45-50

That's not too bad. Which terminal do you work out of?
