Gotcha. Well I was going to work for a 3rd party contractor pulling FXG trailers via line haul and they paid half of the employee's insurance, but the pay per week wasn't worth it. The interview I'm supposed to go to tomorrow is to be hired directly on with FXG. I know you mentioned it depends on the contractor, so just so I understand correctly, there are folks who pull FXG trailers but are actually working for a 3rd party, and then there are folks who are actually working FOR FXG directly correct?

Ask the TM what that job does. As an example, one FxF job I asked about ran from Flag to PHX, worked dock, then returned, driving is about 2 hours each way.
Asking the TM gives you a chance to see if you click with them and their environment. FxF terminals can feel very tight-sphinctered, some more than others. Haven't worked for them, friends have and liked it.TheyCallMeDave Thanks this. -
If you are a greenhorn just hired, be prepared to work the dock ALOT. If it slows down, be prepared to STARVE.
They do not care!! High seniority men will be clocking overtime and you will be LUCKY to eke out 20 hours on the dock. A few men with high seniority will offer to sit home and let bottom guys work but FedEx WILL NOT allow it!!
I am so glad to be away from Fedex and their BS!! I got my CDL to drive, not work the dock or be a yard dog and worry I can't put food on the table if it slows down!!speedyk and TheyCallMeDave Thank this. -
So after all of that is done, including the road test, how long does it typically take to get you in the door for orientation? I've been doing some research and from what I'm reading, FedEx freight takes quite a while to get you in for your first day of orientation. I've read a month is not uncommon from start to finish and several instances that took longer. I doubt they're hard up like SAIA was when they tried to hire me. It only took about a week and a half from the time I applied until my orientation date. I'm not seeing it being that quick with FedEx.
OH, by the way, I totally forgot to share with you all, that UPS is trying to hire me for their OTR position. I'm not really looking to be out like that, but from what I've read they make some decent coin? I'm not really putting them in the running, but I thought it'd be interesting to share.

Fedex Ground isn’t a bad entry to LTL but I wouldn’t make a career of it.
It’s possible to do 65-75k/year walking into a bid run but like others have said the benefits are crap. It’s an easy laid back place where you really can’t do much wrong though. I spent a good bit of time there.
With how much hiring all the LTLs are doing right now I’d only take them as a last resort though. So much more money and benefits on the table.
UPS package is even hiring feeders off the street now. Don’t even bother with “UPS OTR Truckload”. Same name but it’s not the same reputation for money and benefits you’re thinking of. Feeder Driver is what you want there.
And I’ll back up what everyone else has said before me, run from Saia. I know a lot of guys there with a lot of years in and that job isn’t worth it.
Finally, don’t worry about how long the hiring process takes at a good company. It’s worth the wait.TheyCallMeDave Thanks this.
