Gotcha. Well I was going to work for a 3rd party contractor pulling FXG trailers via line haul and they paid half of the employee's insurance, but the pay per week wasn't worth it. The interview I'm supposed to go to tomorrow is to be hired directly on with FXG. I know you mentioned it depends on the contractor, so just so I understand correctly, there are folks who pull FXG trailers but are actually working for a 3rd party, and then there are folks who are actually working FOR FXG directly correct?

If your going to do dock and linehaul that sounds like FedEx Freight. FXG even though their now employees work under a contractor the owner of the truck. FXG owns no tractors they own only their trailers.

Well hell, I guess I misunderstood the woman during the phone interview. I just searched the terminal, along with the TM's name (Randy S) and sure enough it came up as FedEx Freight. I'm guessing that's a bit more on the positive side?

Yes. FedEx Ground has no "dock work" per se that drivers do. There are elves in that building loading those pups, only they don't use forklifts; they use their hands, and their backs, and they are very very sweaty.

Great paying job one of the top. But they are a step below Saia when it comes to micromanagement from what I’ve heard. No cameras though I think. Had a few coworkers come from Fedex Freight to Reddaway when they did a big layoff around the time the economy took a dump.

10-4. What's FedEx Freight looking like currently? Decent as a drivers first ever LTL gig? this position is for line haul/dock by the way.

Ask the TM what that job does. As an example, one FxF job I asked about ran from Flag to PHX, worked dock, then returned, driving is about 2 hours each way.

Asking the TM gives you a chance to see if you click with them and their environment. FxF terminals can feel very tight-sphinctered, some more than others. Haven't worked for them, friends have and liked it.

No cameras, but Fedex has their own security force who can pull you over at any time and do an inspection....just like the DOT. They can inspect any vehicle from any division, not just Freight. I got inspected once by Fedex security at a customer and got written up back at my home terminal for having a loose strap on the floor! Yes can you believe it?!?!

If you are a greenhorn just hired, be prepared to work the dock ALOT. If it slows down, be prepared to STARVE.

They do not care!! High seniority men will be clocking overtime and you will be LUCKY to eke out 20 hours on the dock. A few men with high seniority will offer to sit home and let bottom guys work but FedEx WILL NOT allow it!!

I am so glad to be away from Fedex and their BS!! I got my CDL to drive, not work the dock or be a yard dog and worry I can't put food on the table if it slows down!!

Thanks for the insight Speedy. I intend on interviewing the TM as much as he'll be interviewing me, that's for sure. I'll report back my findings. Also, besides asking what the typical driving to dock ratio is when you're the bottom guy on the road board, what would be some additional questions to ask?

Interesting feedback. Speaking in terms of the hiring process, I had my phone interview on the 2nd. My face to face interview is tomorrow which is the 7th, and I know IF I'm hired I'll have to do a drug test, and of course another #### physical (frustrating) as I just got a new med card a month ago that's good until 2020, on top of that the place they'll more than likely send me is the same place all the local LTL's use in that area. Oh well, that's how corporate places work.

So after all of that is done, including the road test, how long does it typically take to get you in the door for orientation? I've been doing some research and from what I'm reading, FedEx freight takes quite a while to get you in for your first day of orientation. I've read a month is not uncommon from start to finish and several instances that took longer. I doubt they're hard up like SAIA was when they tried to hire me. It only took about a week and a half from the time I applied until my orientation date. I'm not seeing it being that quick with FedEx.

OH, by the way, I totally forgot to share with you all, that UPS is trying to hire me for their OTR position. I'm not really looking to be out like that, but from what I've read they make some decent coin? I'm not really putting them in the running, but I thought it'd be interesting to share.

Fedex Ground isn’t a bad entry to LTL but I wouldn’t make a career of it.
It’s possible to do 65-75k/year walking into a bid run but like others have said the benefits are crap. It’s an easy laid back place where you really can’t do much wrong though. I spent a good bit of time there.

With how much hiring all the LTLs are doing right now I’d only take them as a last resort though. So much more money and benefits on the table.
UPS package is even hiring feeders off the street now. Don’t even bother with “UPS OTR Truckload”. Same name but it’s not the same reputation for money and benefits you’re thinking of. Feeder Driver is what you want there.

And I’ll back up what everyone else has said before me, run from Saia. I know a lot of guys there with a lot of years in and that job isn’t worth it.

Finally, don’t worry about how long the hiring process takes at a good company. It’s worth the wait.
