I had a friend this weekend ask me to run a piece of equipment from Tulsa to Venice,La. It only weighed 15 lbs. He called me at 3p on Friday and said it had to be there no later than 6.30a on Saturday. He said it would pay $800.00.
My question is what is the going rate for something like this? It was roughly 1500 miles round trip.
How much would you guys charge for this type of situation?

are you taking it in a pickup truck if noti would want at least 2000.00 being such short notice
-
if thats all he was paying I would tell his send it overnight via fedex or ups I sure wouldnt drive it down there for that rate
-
We took it down in our mini-van, I thought that was kinda low.
What do most people charge for something like this? My wife and I joked about calling fed-ex on our way down.haha. -
1st: Fed Ex would not have, nor could not have, gotten it there in that time frame.
2nd: 750 loaded miles for $800 is cheap enough to start with, but your situaton is for the roundtrip of 1500 miles, then add the Expedited Freight factor? You got screwed. If you hadn't taken it, he'd would have had no choice but to call an expediter. He'd have paid at least $3.00 to get it there if not more considering the time frame in my opinion else he would have taken it himself. -
True he would have had to pay a higher rate, for the short notice. But it wouldn't have been as high as you would think.
It would have been a one way rate at 750 miles. Maybe $2k to the broker. And he (the broker) most likely could have gotten in sent down (in a van) for about $900 (or less) if he found a driver who didn't have a load for the weekend. Some expedite operations do run vans. And the ones I know, pay about .77 a mile to the owner.
The expediter would have been in excellent position, for Monday morning.
The original poster still made a good dollar. Especially when you consider he done a favor for a friend. And was home within 48 hours.
Hell I'd do it for that rate...once or twice.
$100 for gas $50 for eats....rest in my pocket. Even if the van got 15 miles to the gallon. He didn't spend more than $150 on gas.
