I just wanted to specifically address this point you made.
No, Rand McNally are not going to fix anything.
They have got your money and your opinions and needs are of zero consequence. What is of consequence is making money and they were working on the next model before this one had hit the store shelves. Also all kinds of accessories and related products.
Their energy goes there not revamping a money maker like the 740. All the while it is on the shelves in truck stops they will make money. You only have to buy one and they gotcha.
What R&M really need is a trucker who is knowledgeable about electronics on staff and then to actually listen to the guy.
I have worked in this environment (Motorola) and the corporate arrogance can be shocking.
The 740 is a done deal. There will be no serious upgrades to software - they are busy working on other money making ideas.

Must admit that once I figured out the quirks Keep Trucking's ELD worked great. HORRIBLE launch, completely undermanned. HOWEVER somebody there was listening to a trucker with knowledge. Rand McNally please take note.

    Thanks, man.

To me, it would be more profitable for them just to sell the software only that we could download onto our own compatible tablets. As once the software is created and perfected, there is no more overhead involved. As manufacturing consists of just making copies of the master copy of the software, which isn’t manufacturing at all.

Other than maybe a few customer service people to handle those people that have to have their hand held to do everything, there is really no other overhead involved. It’s almost all pure profit.

Of course, the users would be responsible for supplying their own tablets.

In fact, Rand McNally could make software deals with various tablet makers to supply their software on only compatible tablets. So, when you purchased a compatible tablet, it would already come preloaded on the tablet. That’s the way Microsoft initially became so prosperous.

Thus, even when non-truckers purchased the tablets for other reasons besides trucking, it would still be money going into their bank account.

That would eliminate all of their other overhead that is pretty #### substantial and to me, that would be a much better business model for them to have.

Oh so the font is super small on the 740 too not just the 540? really F'n stupid if you ask me.

Just finished a chat with RM rep on connectivity issues with the 540. Apparently, the 540 wont connect with a hotspot on an Galaxy S8 plus if its password protected. Really? a year old model ONLY connects via open wif on mobile? Given the S9 released today according to verizon I wonder about that phone too.
