Well, I guess this sort of backs up what you are saying about the "cya lat'r" thing at Knight. They are currently running help wanted ads for the Salt Lake City terminal. It was in both Sunday and Monday papers. Oh, and for this area, 34 cpm is really not bad at all. . .
Is that because they have enough drivers that get mad and quit? So they keep a high turn over rate?
Knight is a PITA. At least it was when I worked there. But they had nice tractors. Nice and pretty new compared to a lot of other companies.
OTOH, the trailers, when you could find them, were deplorable. I understand they have replaced a great many of their trailers though.
When I worked there, (over four years ago,) it seemed like it would be an OK company for a single guy, who wanted to run the miles, and didn't care when or if he got home. But the continual hassles with payroll over problems, coupled with never being able to find a trailer to hook, and they way dispatch sucked if you were away from your home terminal, (which was really the only way to make money,) just made it not worthwhile, at least for me.
I drove out of the Denver terminal, and had a great DM. But he did not have control over my dispatch if I was out of his area.
I also hated that you had to do local work at less than local wages any time you hit a metro area. They could and would just leave you sit, until you had done a few local runs for them.
I actually do have mixed emotions about this company, because there were some good folks there. -
And in answer to Army91W, ALL big/national trucking co's make their $$$ off of the backs of the drivers-----and the way payroll is set up, the driver never comes out ahead (aka, the co. always wins)!!
If you are driving purely for $$$, then dont drive for Knight!
But they have many pluses (most western terms home weekly/10 days, dont track out-of-route miles, route yourself pending schedule/weather/personal stops, pick your own place to fuel within the list, good home time, etc.)

Just came over the Qualcomm, if you refuse to chain up with Knight, you'll be let go.
Baack Thanks this. -
So much for their "Safety is everything" policy....only drive if you feel safe!

If you feel unsafe driving with chains on doing 25 mph I suggest you go home for the winter. Where I live you ain't making your P&D's without them since all the side streets have deep snow on them for over a week. -
Congrats! Having chained up many times in my life, No freight is worth ice & snow....if the newbies dont feel safe then they shoudnt risk it---but chaining at least once is good for the soul...

I mainly chained to drop my load and get another one! Dont like to sit at truck stops.. -
I feel unsafe with other drivers feeling unsafe tossing chains on wet pavement.
Maybe if they paid to throw iron. -
I just finished week one and its not as bad as I expected. The freedom of picking your loads is nice. The dispatcher always asks me if I want it. If not just say no. I dont have to report back to work until I'm ready. It's just like doing the o/o thing. Other good points are the driving hours. I ran 580+ miles every day and finished at night and slept like a baby. They don't want you driving at night after 12am. They also brought me back home today just like I asked. The pay is pretty quick. They send you a msg on the quail com stating your exact amount. The per diem is untaxed and the rest is taxed making it pretty easy to net a decent take home pay. That's some of the good points. Some bad points are... the bene's ... 80/20 with $70.00 a week and an $800 anual deductable. The papework is very dificult for an unorganized individual like myself. The quailcom is new to me so i'm still trying to figure it out. You lose your bonus if your idle is more than 10%? it may be 20. The bonus is nearly impossible to get anyhow. Your logs has to average 98% or better and they check it with the computer. You have to sit through 7 safty meetings a year. They want you to check and write down your fuel milage and try to average 6.5 or better. (i think mine was 4.46). Your logs has to be completly filled out with your hours added up for the next day with no blank boxes. etc. The bonus is not that big of a deal anyhow. It's a 500.00 savings bond which equals $250.00 if you cash it and there's a penalty for cashing it. ..Now I don't know about the chain thing from one of the prior post's but the saftey man told me. "If it was the point where he needed to break out the chains, he'd be looking for a motel".
knighton5 Thanks this. -
Who pays to throw them?
