With Parallels you can mount a virtual pc inside your mac and run any pc program.... in case you have those occaisional pc software needs.
only downside is you open yourself upto pc based viruses while you have paralells running. -
OS-X can not get a PC based virus through a virtual PC. Once you kill the session the virus will die.
I know DeLorme Street Atlas will run the mapping with GPS, for a live moving map OS-X running a virtual PC.
I neither love or hate OS-X. But OS-X has a very limited list of business class and games written for it. As for viruses, the only reason they do have them for the MAC is because the lack of market share. It has been proven over and over again the OS-X is easier to crack then Windows. Your safety is based on the small number of machines using it.

Well, yes and no.
Any kind of virus that could come in on the VPC side will stay on that side.
In my case, Windows is cut off from the outside world and has no idea that it needs to be updated. I never connect to the web through my VPC, and PC based viruses don't work on a Mac anyway. When I need to update my DDL, I download the .exe file to a thumb drive through Safari and then import the file to DDL that way.
VMWare Fusion rates higher than Parallels too. I have never used Parallels, but I am very happy with Fusion.
Also: once I had everything installed, updated, and running correct, I made a "snapshot" (that option comes with the VPC programs) and when Windows crashes (it will and has) I just reverted to the snapshot... problem solved.
If you do that, remember that your DDL program will need to be updated to the current state since the snapshot will be an earlier version.
Remember: back it up! back it up! back it up! -
i have a macbook and i love it!
i am adamant about doing the windows virtual machine just for streets and trips. i think ill just buy a stand alone gps unit and call it a day. -
I have been a Mac user since Al Gore invented the internet.
And yes, I use a MacBook in the truck with a Sprint USB aircard, Fujitsu SnapScan scanner and an HP printer. It all works seamlessly. The Mac is bug free and rarely ever gets turned off. I don't even have a case for it, just throw it back there on the floor.
And we did have PC's, but ditched them totally over 2 years ago. As far as software, there is enough out there to run a trucking company. Maps? It is called Google. Want GPS, get a Garmin and stick it on the dash. Logs, buy a log book or loose leafs. The log book ap is cool, I used to use it on my pc laptop. But after a few crashes, printer problems and trying to get a new activation key $$$$ a few times... And I looked at the bottom line. It was cheaper just to go back to the old fashioned method.
And here is a mapping GPS program for the Mac - google routebuddy
And as far as Macs getting hacked or viruses? To my knowledge there is only one program out there on the internet that can infect a Mac, and it is found on porn sites. Some sort of viewer like Windows Media Player or QuickTime. Not these actual viewers, but something similar. And you have to voluntarily download it and activate it.
Stay away from porn viewer downloads, and you will be ok.
Just know what you are downloading, because only the Mac owner can infect his or her own machine. It ain't nothing like a windows box, no matter how few are out there. That is why the military is going Mac for their most secure info and operations.

C64, now that is what I'm talkin' about! -
Waterloo, the only reason OS-X is not being hacking is lack of machines compared to windows. It's not cost effective to invest in hacking OS-X, but if the military adopts the OS-X it will become cost effective.
OS-X safety is in the lack of numbers.

Mac user here too. Best 3 years of my computing life.
There is a OS X logging app called TruckLogger. You need Leopard to run it. It is even free, as most OS X apps seem to be.
I use my iPhone to control iTunes while I'm driving, the laptop is plugged into the stereo. I built a small rack to mount the laptop behind the jump seat while driving. I use InsomniaX to run the laptop in clamshell mode while driving.
Between my phone, google maps on the laptop(Sprint aircard) and a little common sense I don't need a GPS.
My next computer based purchase will be a Cradlepoint PHS300 for my aircard. -
There have been a few contests on who can hack a Mac. If you read the news reports, it looks like it has been done. But, if you read what the actual behind the scene happenings, the operator allowed the hack in. But no one ever mentions that. All of these competitions have been dubious to say the least.
I will stick with my Mac, that runs absolutely no virus programs. And in near 20 years of Mac usage has never had a virus, trojan, adware, blue screen of death or any other such incident. Sure, there have been problems, but I cannot remember them...
But my PC's! I can remember THOSE! Days of down time! Stand alones, all of my business stuff on there... The time loss alone was outrageous.
The Macs, call em what you want, work, and work, and work, and work...
I gave my daughter-in-law a MacBook. She is a school teacher who "used" to laugh at all of the Macs in my house... My step son, another diehard PC'r, is "now" begging to get ahold of my old PowerMac G5, that I am not currently using.
That speaks volumes in my book coming from two people who my wife and I have supported through thick and thin, but who also found it necessary to ridicule us for our computer choice. Until I gave them one to actually use.
Same on my wife's end. She works for a Fortune 500 in the prototype area. She has been telling the guys to "just go buy a Mac" for a few years now. They always come to her with their home computer problems for some reason. Finally all of these dweebs gave the Mac platform a good look. At least one or two guys a month are buying Macs and kicking themselves for not doing it sooner. It is a running joke with me and the wife.
Funny how that works?
Try a Mac, you will never go back!
