Hey everyone I'm looking for some advice. I live in southwest Iowa and use a small local cell phone carrier that uses Verizon towers. Back in October I switched to an unlimited data plan and was forced to get a new phone. I had an s7 and wanted to use the insurance to replace it since I only had a few months tell it was paid off and got pushed into getting a new phone. So everything was great in the world for a few months tell I got a call on the 14th of February from the phone company saying that due to me using 33 gigs of roaming data that I would have to switch the next day to a 8 gig plan that shuts off. I tried speaking with a supervisor about it and was basically told to either pay 750 dollars on this phone to get out of my contract that no other carrier will let me use (I only called Verizon actually) or get over it and deal with 8 gigs of data. So if you were in my situation what would you do? My credit already sucks and I own my home but I do want to buy a new pick up next year so I don't really want to be hounded by a collection agency forever over it.

I don't know too much about phone plans.. but I have the same unlimited plan since high school... I always use about 23 gigs a month.. AT&T always comes in every now and then and raises me $5 a month, but I'm still under $100 a month which is fine.. You might want to look at it being a contracted plan... If you signed a contract with them for unlimited data, then they can't force you to leave.. they can just do what AT&T does and throttle your service. Might want to check into the legal side of things.
Goddragon555 Thanks this. -
My advice is read the contract you signed. In there you will find your answer, it will tell you how they handle "unlimited data". Some throttle you back, some charge you and then some just cut you off. Its all in the contract you signed with them. Good luck.

If your credit already sucks. What's the worry about buying a new truck?

Something fishy here. What's the name of the company you're currently using? Take a look at the contract, and then seek legal advice as well, maybe from a consumer advocacy group. This just doesn't sound right.

Basically they told me I had to use at least 50% of my data in network. Their network is basically limited to southwest Iowa. The company is called chat mobility. It's a small company that uses their own towers and Verizon towers. I like them because their a lot cheaper then Verizon and actually have good customer service. I got a call telling me that I used 33 gigs of roaming data which they have to pay the fees for and was told I have to switch to an 8 gig plan that shuts off. I then told them that I would be switching companies and they refused to take my phone back and Verizon won't let me use this phone. So basically I was told either pay the 750ish I owe on this phone or deal with it. Paying the phone off wouldn't be a big deal but since I can't use it anywhere else it essentially become a 750 dollar ipod/calculator.

I wonder about that... I would check with someone and see if there's a way to unlock that phone. I'm pretty sure it can be done.
-
He can't unlock till the phone is paid for.
I'm in the same dillema sort of. I want to switch my phone from sprint to att. But sprint won't give me the code till i pay the remaining balance.
Unless you buy the phone outright. You're stuck with a balance. -
According to their TOS, the data will throttled after 22GB AND there may be extra charges and higher rates for Off-Network usage (roaming) AND they may limit or terminate service (their discretion and without notice) for, among other things, more than 50% Off-Network voice and/or data usage.
Yeah, it's in the contract he signed up for. -
This is true but he could pay off the phone and then unlock it and move on to another carrier.
No matter what it sounds like the small carriers doesn’t fit his needs because of extensive travel so pretty much left pay or take the phone and move on.
