What is the latest on Smith? I am putting together my paperwork to fax to them. I have not seen anything bad, but would like to hear from the ones who just recently hired on.
-
BTW, did your husband get his escrow back from JBHT?
They assure us that it is returned within 45 days. -
Smith Transport is great
They are one of the best to work for, all companies are tight on miles right now, I have several friends who work at smith, they have been there about 10 years on average and home every weekend and have no problems moving or keep moving except right now economic stimulus-there is very little movement these days, but I can tell you this much barry smith the owner can smile when he looks at his drivers, because yes he does still drive too. -
I worked for them for 13 months... stuck it in the last two months to see if things got better.... they did not... i usually stayed out 3-4 weeks straight... but the longer termed drivers with Smith whom never went out on weekends got more miles... so in short.. they have their A-list. You will ge doing a lot of short runs,, average length <400. A lot of 2nd class mail... and you do sit a lot since the Post Office does not give a crap about 2nd class mail.. you may have 5 trucks in line and they only have one door. Union too so they need their breaks and lunch... I enjoyed the company, but the total lack of miles made me switch to another carrier. And if you think I am another disgrunted driver... look at the calander for sale... mine was the truck to the far right.. They still owe me my escrow, back detention pay and vacation pay. I have waited 5 weeks and have not seen the settlement check. They do have runs to Oregon and Montana.. but those are only for a select few drivers... be prepared to run illegal logs too... Run illegal and you get more miles... and yes one of the detention pays is for sitting 13 hours at a shipper... 35 trucks waiting... their reason... "oh you were on break"...nope I was sitting at a shipper... if Smith does decide not to pay then I will write a letter to the PA Labor board. I did the work. I should be paid. Otherwise if you join you will get an 04-05-06 truck that will be broke a lot. Just a lot of disappointment in an otherwise ellecent company... sorry if any typo's... just got up...MK
david07003 Thanks this. -
It's funny how these big companies claim to have all the best accounts and more freight than all the others but they cant get you home regardless where you live. J.B. told me Atlanta wasn't a good area they can only get a truck through there every 14 to 21 days.

RoadHog, don't think I'm being a smart-###. I'm just trying to set you down a good path here.
"Your post is what I'm getting at.
Some advice, if I may: do your research before your husband makes a move. This is the reason he got into so much trouble at JBH. Trucking companies love those who don't do their research, and of that bunch, they especially love those who will believe anything and everything a recruiter says.
OK, as one who is researching truck companies, I need to know of any sites which provide objective stats about the variou trucking companies?
Do you know of any such sites"
That is facts about their the quality of their trucking fleet, the quality of their trainers, the number of accidents their drivers are involved in? ETC
The personal opinions of the members of the truck drivers on this blog and other site lean one of two ways ( most of the time) either pro or con, mostly because either are afraid of a negative reaction from their bosses or out of a social ban again saying any thing against any body or any business.
So, I am searching for objective reports on the quality of trucking companies
This not intended to be a slam on his boards members or the trucking driving industry but a request for the facts, nothing but the facts,

And talk to drivers that "look" successful.
Complainers are easy enough to find, as they will go out of there way to rant to anyone who will listen.
Successful drivers and business people will usually be quiet and unassuming, as they have no need to be the center of attention. -
I'm wondering why Zotoa brought a dead thread back to life? It was dead for 11 months and THEN she dives into roadhog who posted back in 7/2007 and hasn't been seen since 9/2007! WTF is that about? I think she needs to start looking at the top left corner of the posts and look at the date she is about to reply to. Usually after a month or so no one cares! Especially 11 months!
