Is it a big job to change oil pan gasket

    Just wondering how big a job it is to change the oil pan gasket, getting fed up with the oil on the shop floor, its a Detroit 60 series in our 2001 Kenworth T600, its parked for the winter and in the summer when the oil is changed i was thinking about doing it at that time, any comments and what all do i need to know, thanks.

    I've never done it on a big rig but have on a pickup and its not really a big deal.

    Big problem on a Ford F350 7.3 diesel. You have to pull the motor.

    I have never looked at the motor on big truck with the thought of it. I would think they should be be fairly easy to do at the time of service.

    Simple, drop the oil pan, clean off old gasket, apply new gasket with some type of sealant like Peratex, put the oil pan back up. A couple of hours.

    abc then again am not sure of the clearance over the axle have a jack handy incase u need to jack up the front of the frame

    Shouldn't be hard at all. Should be plenty of room to clear the axle on your truck. I know it will on our T8. The oil pickup tube might make it harder to clear, but maybe not.

    changing the gasket want be bad, but check the oil pan itself Detroit put fiberglass pans on our international's. we changed a couple of them.

    There is a file relating to that project, I did a search on Google, 7-60-03a pdf at Google. It is some pages directly from the service manual.

    The seal is reusable provided it is not visibly damaged. You should be able to see where the engine is leaking, you might have to clean the oil off to tell where it starts. Some of them appear to be leaking around the pan,but are leaking higher on the motor. This seal fits into a groove on top of the pan and must be carefully fitted into that groove to avoid distorting the seal.

    You have a setback axle,you may have to jack the frame up to get enough clearance to work on it.

    One other thing, if you run it a couple quarts low, you won't lose nearly so much oil, it might not be a problem anymore if it is the pan gasket leaking.
    The former head mechanic told me not to keep a leaker full.

    Rock hauler is right. The 60 series Detroit has a fiberglass oil pan. Of all the ones I've had off, it was one of two things. Either it was just the mounting bolts were loose, or the oil pan had a crack in it, usually around the bolt. I would also check the diamond seal for leaks. These are very bad to leak also, more so than the oil pan. Hope this helps.
