Driving for Walmart

    I have a phone interview with Walmart Monday. Is it still a good company to drive for? I’ve heard a lot of mixed feelings about them lately.

    There's some Walmart chatter in their sub forum elsewhere here. From what I can gather, it won't be much longer before they will completely shed their private fleet in favor of contracted carrier like they've been doing on the grocery side forever. Lately I see more and more non-Walmart trucks pulling Walmart dry vans with non-grocery DC number scheme.

    I was thinking about moving to them as well, but looks like it's too late, now. Just a matter of time before you'd be working for Swift or Marten or other mega carrier if you still wanted to do the Walmart thing. Lots of current Walmart drivers are less then happy with little changes over the past year or so. The writing is on the wall.

    I think they are going to whittle down the private fleet as they can, and by attrition. But I realize maybe a few locations are still hiring so I don't know what the hell that's about and I doubt you'd get a straight answer from anybody at Walmart about what kind of long-term future you could expect.

    If they're still buying new trucks and you would not have to slip seat, that might be a good sign for at least a few years but I'm not sure if that would be the case.

    So all the talk at MATS last year at Louisville was BS Apprently the talk of Walmart trucking fleet was the best thing since sliced bread .

    Thanks for the info guys. I guess my biggest concern would be the pay starting out. I would be running out of the Buckeye, AZ DC. If it only lasts 3-5 years I could go with plan B and buy my own truck.
    I’m with Mclane FS right now. The $ is good, just don’t know how much longer my knees can handle running ramps. They are on a down swing of their own also. We are no longer appreciated for what we’ve given to the company.....

    I know a old co worker who runs very hard he’s gonna clear 100K at the bottom rate. He’s been there a year. But like I said he runs hard. He left a 80k year job to do it to. Yeah I came into this job with a bad knee already I know how you feel about the ramp.

    They have recently reduced the Cents per mile for new-hires.
