Oh please ...you can afford another pair, Zenni has cheap pair for $7

I worked in harsh environments and would destroy glasses at some customers, I would keep two extra pair in my Alice pack.

I had heard it was a reg and have always carried another set with me.

 

I heard it was a reg, also. But I never bothered to look it up, because I NEEDED to carry a spare pair. If I broke them on the road, I couldn't see well enough to drive.

 

That is what I came to say. Get a copy of the script and ask for the pupillary distance because it is more accurate than doing it yourself. They don’t have to give it to you though. But, if you have a higher prescription like me, it will cost closer to $80.

I think there is, if corrective lenses required is stated on the DL. This is my situation and I've been asked to see a backup pair on 2 separate level I's (and both in California)

But regardless, If you think about it. If you truly need corrective lenses to see well at distances, why would you be without a spare set since getting home or to a doctor is not easy in this job?

 

Exactly!! A prudent driver should not need a regulation to do the smart thing in regard to staying legal and on the road. I had a vision restriction on my drivers license going all the way back to my teens. I even had it on all my medicals. I wore disposable contacts for many years, however I always had both a pair of regular glasses as well as a pair of prescription sunshades in my shaving kit.

 

I just sent a text to my local New York State police CMV inspector and confirmed there is no regulation saying you must have back up eye wear.
His words were”That also seems excessive “
He is a real good guy and not out to get every driver.
With that being said if you have the means to get a back up set of eye wear you absolutely should.
So the answer to the OP is no you don’t need back up eye wear but you should get some as soon as your circumstances allow.

 

I'm not doubting your comment. I would be interested in seeing under what authority a California DOT officer would make such a request.
