Imagine how many serious incidents are able to be kept out of the national news circuit? I guess some incidents just can't be kept quiet.

Apparently they had an incident last year (didn’t involve a fatality) in Arizona that caused them to shut the program down for awhile. We never heard about that one. Which proves exactly what you say is true

I heard about the incident you're likely referring to but I suspect every bad incident we hear about, 5 go unnoticed by the national media.

It was only a matter of time before this happened.

I think this came a lot sooner then most of the AI (Artificial Intelligence) fanboys were expecting, and a lot later then most truck drivers were thinking.

From what I read, they were jaywalking. So I don't feel it's appropriate to say that the person got what they deserved, but this is not the vehicle's fault. Why should they stop autonomous vehicles when human drivers are also hitting pedestrians? It's like saying Teslas are unsafe because one caught fire, while ignoring that gas and diesel vehicles also catch fire.

To play for every possible outcome in the real world, is a futile endeavor.

These AI coders have never met ditzy chick that's texting and putting on lipstick, or a little Asian lady looking for an address, while driving, backwards, then forward - real life unpredictability.

I can only imagine AI running into Mr. Bean

That actually sums it up pretty well. We all knew this was coming. Sadly.

Who said they “got what they deserved”?

I'm not calling anybody out, I'm just saying how I feel. If this is not the car's fault, then it is the pedestrian's fault. Getting killed because they were jaywalking is a bit extreme for a consequence. Instead of shutting down autonomous vehicles, maybe people should focus on programs to help pedestrians understand the importance of properly using the crosswalk.
