I have heard of lawyers beating the ticket because the bear on the ground is not the one who was shooting radar. If the bear in the air uses timers how can that stand up in court if it is challenged and there is no radar?

This guy is too smart to remain a Swift driver. Common Sense too? Amazing. Nice Post Swifty!

When the police run a speed trap, the observer tells the trooper on the ground what vehicle and how fast it was going, then the observer has to watch the vehicle until the trooper on the ground lights it up. When the motorist appears in court the trooper who wrote the ticket and the trooper acting as observer both appear in court to explain how the motorist was clocked.
The observer tells the court that he watched the vehicle from the air, started the timer as the vehicle crossed the start mark, stopped the timer at the finish mark, the known distance between the marks and the method of computing the speed. When done correctly, the motorist has little to no defense.
Back in the eighties, I heard a driver on the radio talking about getting a ticket for speeding around the southbound rest area on I-71 just north of Columbus.
He said the trooper stopped him and 5 or 6 other trucks and said they were clocked by air doing 69 MPH. I told him there was no police aircraft doing speed enforcement there and he asked how I knew that.
I explained that Slohio uses VHF low band and that you can hear them on the scanner for miles before you get to where they're working. I told him that if he sent in a plea of not guilty the cop who wrote the ticket would fail to show up in court, while he may lie, he wouldn't find another trooper who would lie for him. I knew there was no aircraft working within fifty miles, because I would have heard them on the scanner. Some states that are just looking for revenue figure that out of state motorists are good for a quick fine because they can't or won't come back to fight the ticket, and will just mail in the fine.

    Hyper Thanks this.

I rarely pass a truck without asking *politely* if the driver needs help. I NEVER tell another driver how to drive his truck. At worst, I'll fire up the radio and ask the other driver to please do something (like, turn on his lights or some such) "Driver, please turn on your lights, I almost didn't see you"

I try to couch it in such a way as to make it sound like *I* need the help.

On occasion, I've been known to offer help to another driver trying to park.. I don't say "do you need help?" instead - I put it "would you LIKE some assistance?" Use words that are less ... inflamatory

I'm a Swifty noob also. I'm still in training and bend over backwards to be safe and courteous to all traffic on the road. Most truckers acknowledge courtesy when it is given, but there are a few super truckers that won't signal when allowed in or speed on downgrades to get around a lot of traffic. I can smell their brakes all the way down, while I have geared down and run the Jake brake.
Being a Swifty means you're the butt of everyone's jokes too. I guess, petty insecure people have to have someone to look down on too.

I think it says a lot more about the person saying it than the person it's directed to...

Reminds me of playing on Xbox Live, playing in chat rooms, or anywhere else people can hide behind anonymity. The worst comes out f people . . . or perhaps their true selves come out

I honestly cant remember the last time a driver stoped and asked if I needed help slidding my Tand!!! It used to be a common thing but anymore the only help you get is when someone wants to point out something he or she may do diffrently.

I have two whole weeks on the road solo (that tells you how green I am). The other day I had to slide my tandems and my fifth wheel to get the load scaled right. The tandems went fine but I couldn't get the fifth wheel to move at all. After a few tries another driver came over and showed me how to dolly down the trailer and slide the fifth wheel. I would have never thought of that. Without his help I guess I would still be there trying to get that load right. There are drivers who will still help out a newbie. And newbies who definitely appreciate the help.

Hey Joe... Just remember to pay that favor back by helping out another driver sometime. I believe in KARMA and what comes around goes around. If we all would work together out here our jobs and lifes would be so much better! Thanks for that post, hopefuly you inspired at least one driver to look for a good deed to hand out!
