One of the hardest lessons we have to learn, right at that final step...at the threshold of obtaining the coveted Mancard...the final lesson is just what you described. You get a certain age, and everything becomes a peter contest. Some guys even have peter contest with girls. Does that even make sense? Having a peter contest with a peterless contestant? Ford vs Chevy is a peter contest.
I wrote about this awhile back about how you know when you are a Man...it's when the Men recognize you as one of them. When I was a kid, and the relatives got together, the Men would sit and talk, the women would go off to a separate place, and the kids would go play outside. One day, I went into my uncle's house for a family gathering. I was about 17, working 3rd shift and going to highschool. When I walked inside, my mom went off with the women. My uncle sitting in a group of Men, sees me, holds out a chair and called me over. One of the Men hands me a beer. Never again was I allowed to go hang with the young people.
Well, after we ate, my uncle challenged me to an armwrestling match. I had been chopping trees for a decade, worked as a roofer during the summers, and was benching around 350lbs. And my uncle was past his prime. Well, we locked up and went at it. It ended as a draw. In private, my mom said to me, "You could have beaten him, couldn't you? Why didn't you?"
"It would have been disrespectful."
It was a test. My uncle could see that I was physically strong. But having true might is beyond the physical. When guys find the need to have peter contests, they're not strong. Having a chip on your shoulder and feeling the need to prove yourself are too, signs of weakness. He was testing me. I made the grade.Last edited: Mar 22, 2018
