Pull the head and measure protrusion of the liners. The factory sets them at 10 thousands of an inch. But I have been reading of motors with less, and none are set to the same height, they are all over the map, hence the dropped liners. When rebuilding, 14 thousands of an inch is said to be the best height to set. Install head, torque down, sit overnight and re-torque to allow proper seating of head and gasket.
Do your best not to lug the motor, and stay away from turning up the HP to ridiculous levels.

Well. That's a bigger job than I can do myself. I don't think my mechanic is an engine guy. Everything but.
Only time I'll let it get below about 1200-1250 is if I'm about to crest the hill. No pyro on this one, but I know that's how you make heat and fast. It does pull real strong.
It is the stock 500/1850. I have no interest in more power or faster. I just want to know it's a reliable machine. These ones don't do good pushing more power anyway. I'll F around when I get my glider in 2020-2021 -
I would install a pyro, at the very least. And you already know about the fuel pump.

Considering where I can put it. My dash is full. I'll post some pictures of it when I go back to work. Might be a few days

Here is how I solved my full dash issue... One is a Right Weigh scale and the other is a VDO Pyrometer in the AutoMeter metal gauge pods/cups.

One of the greatest motors ever put in a truck sounded like it was falling apart at idle. It sounded like it was hunting, even though it wasn't. It sounded like tappets were falling out, they weren't. It was the reason that Cats were called Clatterpillars!gokiddogo and Justrucking2 Thank this.

I miss those days, the smell of diesel in the mornings... Now, if you hear a clatter like that in these new motors, you know you have real issues.Brettj3876 and Bean Jr. Thank this.

And that engine put out some real horsepressure. My dad drove with guy occasionally who had a 325 in a W9 in the early 70s. They added an aftercooler to make it a 425, but I bet it would run with big Cats of the early 2000s. My dad also drove a 352 with one that was supposedly putting out 500 at the wheels. It was geared to go just a little faster than the speed limit, about 58, but on a long pull, the most he ever did was split it to direct.
I miss those days, and I miss my dad.Brettj3876, gokiddogo and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
So do I. I'm facing a major life's decision because of epilepsy and would love to have my dads counsel on it.Brettj3876, Bean Jr. and gokiddogo Thank this. -
One day that will happen.
But at the moment it will have to be on the back burner.scottied67 Thanks this.
